Blocking a Civ

Is there a config change I can make somewhere to block Carthage(Dido) from ever appearing in my games? She's not tough but her language is so very ugly to my ear that were I king of a real civilization, I would have thrown their ambassador out just for speaking grotesquely in my court with the ultimate aim of conquering them so I could kill off their language. To my ear, at least, it's horrible and the most irritating thing is I can count on Carthage appearing in about 80% of my games.

You could use a mod. One example is Really advanced setup in which you can disable civs from appearing.

Without using a mod, the only way to prevent a civ from appearing is through exclusion: under advanced settings, you can select which civs you want to appear on the map. If you fill all slots, none will be available for the undesired civ. Collateral damage is knowing who will be on the map, which can be disenchanting, but how much do you want the undesired civ to not appear?

Regrettably have to admit I use this trick often when playing Theodora to ensure that Haile and Boudicca don't snag the beliefs I want...

I have played this game for several years now and find it amazing that I've never noticed an "advanced settings". Sheesh, do I feel schooled. I'm going to have to check that out. While there are some less desirable civs that I'd prefer to not be in my game, the only one I cannot stand is Dido. Picking the ones I want? Well now, that's going to take some thought.

When I play games that have preselected civs, I prefer to pick civilizations that have had historical run-ins with the civs I'm playing. Examples:

Aztecs: my favorite civ. Whenever playing on a multi-landmass map, I include Spain in the game and hope that they start on the other one. When they make it over, things will go a little... bit... differently. "Hey Cortez, you want these lands? Tell it to the cannons."

Celts: include Rome, often advance on them.

Greeks: usually have Egypt in the game, often an ally

Poland: include Germany... revenge. Similarly, Byzantine games often include the Ottomans

Germany, Japan, England, Russia, America: pick one and include all the others, see how the world wars pan out. Similarly, you could play a mesopotamia game, or a predominantly Native Americas game.

I like to pick maps from certain regions, then fill it with what I might expect to encounter there. For example, I just played a scrambled east asia map as Korea against Siam, China, Mongolia, Japan, and Indonesia. Handily won a science victory. Poor Mongolia could never really get his rampage going, failing to conquer city states fairly regularly (that probably stunted his growth, with all the wasted production). Meanwhile, China conquered like 4 city states, but otherwise there were no captures. Surprisingly little war between civs happened (Siam once beat up on Mongolia, but took no cities, and otherwise nothing).

You should also exclude Wu Zetian and Napoleon... even when absolutely friendly they're already very phony. I personally hate Attila as he's always getting so loud and sounding rude right off the bat.

Most sympathizing voice/talk: Genghis :D

Is it possible to simply delete Dido's speech file, or would that break the game?

I am wondering if the OP would be satisfied with a silent Dido, or if he wants Carthage totally gone.

"Be sausage man"

I like Attila because you can fight him without any real grudge (unless you take his capital), but yeah, he is always so loud. Usually makes me jump when he first pops out of the fog of war. :mischief:
