The Chinese units that won were in a city so I could not see what damage they took.

one horse retreated against your elite sword and one horse was killed while almost killing it.

Basically, this is an Always War game, with the only way to win being Conquest or Domination, so there's no diplomacy.

You've actually inherited a strong position, with classical's China civ doing very well up to this point.
