Borrowing money from civs

Hey there. When playing a builder deity game, I ussually set my research at 0% and focus on a great economy with coastal cities, marketplaces, and banks.

The AI civs rarely want to loan me money (by clicking the "care to give me a loan switch". I found that I can create loans by taking their cash, then offering GPT in exchange for it.

Then I use the money to invest in my civ by rush marketplaces, banks, graneries, or aquadeqts. The city growth or income multipliers insure that I get more on my investment and have new GPT to continue borrowing.

Anyone else do this? India give the best loans. If you have a game where india has a big stockpile of gold it can really help you!

PS.. I used a feindish strategy againist those Indians a few games back. They had like 10k of gold, so I traded them about 600 GPT and used the money to steal their tech! Muhaha ha.

PS another great strategy to use if you still are able to use GPT: When an attack from an AI civ is imminent, trade for their money or tech using GPT. Set science and lux to 0, and set all citizens to max trade to get the most from them. Go back and reset your science and lux to preloan levels. Ohh no, you will be in massive debt per turn! Problem solved, tell that AI to remove his troops or declare war, when he declares war your debt is gone and you get to keep his tech/money. Be prepared for defense now!!!

i have never seen any ai loan me money from the "care to give me a loan?" button. strange, why is it there? once i asked greece, who had 105k, but he had to save money!!!

back to topic, very good post civzombie, although i've never done that, seems too disadvantageous for me, although i like to loan!

the second part, about the civ who will declare war, it will really help me, thanks!

The deal for GPT and then declare war trick is a cute one, but I find it works at most twice a game, as the AI gets wary of such a tactic quickly.

Superslug:

This is different, you use it when you know they are about to attack you! This isn't make a deal, declare war, this is, "I think you are about to sneak attack me so I am going to make a GPT deal". When they sneak attack, deal over, no rep hit.

Think of it as "insurance".

Yes, I have once gotten the loan button to work *once*

i oncehad a game where i took 2 loans. I took them since it was cool even though it was more hamrful than good.

I should have been more specific. The elaborate version of the GPT/war trick involves provoking a war rather than declaring it. It's usually done via espionage...

I often take out gold-for-gpt loans when I am 2 turns away from researching a tech but run out of money. That way I don't have to adjust my science slider. Once I get the tech I sell it and get more than enough to pay off my loan.

DaveMcW-isn't that a lot like paying off your Visa with Mastercard, your Mastercard with your Discover, etc? Who cares? If it works!

Need to play higher levels. From about monarch on up, from about the middle ages on up, the more well-off AI civs will be rolling in cash. (At least until the world wars start up and everyone goes commie, anyway.)
