I am playing a high to low game, and I end up with Charadon of the Doviello in the end. Acheron controls a huge area in the middle of my territory. I want to take his city, but can't declare war on the barbarians.

Any tip on how to achieve that? I don't want to wait until I have won the game (more than one and a half the score of the closest opponent) to take that city...

You can enter barbarian territory without declaring war, and as far as I can tell it isn't possible to declare war on a civilization by either attacking from within their territory or attacking a unit of theirs that's within your territory. (The reasoning is that the war declaration would expel one party in either case.) As far as I know the only way to declare war on barbarian is to find a barbarian unit in the wilderness (or a third party's territory) and attack it.

Haven't played base FFH lately, but afaik using a spell that declares war (like Ring of Flames) should work as well.

I don't have air mana, or a mage able to cast damage dealing spells yet. I don't have the priest line researched either (remember, last change from high to low, got the Doviello...).

I was able to break the peace by spawning a barbarian with the WB in a neutral territory and attacking it. Acheron is now dead, but the Sons of Inferno are tough to kill! I lost almost all my army, even after softening them with catapults!

Ok, now that my island is secured, I can turn my greedy eye on the green lands of the Ljosalfar... Thanks guys for the tips!

At one point, there was a spell available to all your units if you were at peace with the barbs that would declare war on them (at the time, you needed to declare war to explore ruins, as I recall).

I don't usually play the barb-friendly races, so I don't know when that changed, but it seems like something that ought to still be available.

Are you sure that wasn't a modmod?

You do need to be at war with the Barbarians in order to explore ruins, but I don't recall there ever being a spell to make that a one-click process.

I think that if you can get a HN unit then you will have the option to declare war on the Barbarians if you use it to attack a Barbarian unit, even if that unit is in your territory or Barbarian territory. Another possibility would be to build a ship and go looking for a sea creature that may have survived. It will be HN and in unclaimed waters, and so attacking it will give you the option to declare war on the Barbarians.
