Bts slowdown

Greetings all

I recently purchased the gold package on steam after my son damaged my disc version beyond repair. However, while vanilla and Warlords both run just fine BTS putters along extremely slowly and crashes on bigger maps. I don't really understand what's going on since it ran just fine before on exactly the same system. I've tried re-installing a few times which didn't help, but I'd be really grateful if somebody could help me out. I really love this game and have played it since its first iteration back in the day.

is bts also from steam?
is there a reason xp is not updated to service pack 3?

Yes, bts, vanilla and warlords are all downloaded from steam. I don't know about service pack 3, but I'll try updating immediately.

that would be the first I'd try - I *think* steam always forces the newest patches - but am not sure: is bts patched to 3.17?
also: get a newer graphics driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_185.85_whql.html

Well I've got the newest patch (steam does that) and I've updated Video drivers, however, my computer gives me the blue screen o' death when I try to update to service pack 3 ...and I've still got the heartrending slowness issue, sigh...

what error message does the blue screen show? it should be logged in the event log:
