So, i'd noticed the Dutch spawned in northern Denmark (on the pigs) in my game as the Vikings, so i played as the Dutch. And lo and behold, I also spawn in Denmark. Aren't you supposed to be able to found Amsterdam to start with (given that you have culture there the first turn, just no units there...)

Edit: Ok, it may just be the 600AD start that's really messed up. I just started another game as teh Dutch (still spawning in Denmark) where the Spiral Miniaret had been completed by Byzantium (?!?) and Notre Dame finished 2 turns after i started. (France didn't even have engineering yet).

Ive seen Byzantium build Spinal Minaret several times, my last game with The Russians i saw the Dutch in the south of Sweden but they still founded Amsterdam and all the units where gone from Sweden.

Yeah, if they spawn and they're already in somebody's cultural borders, it'll kick all their units out for one turn, and then they'll reappear where the capital is supposed to be, and they'll found the capital correctly. It happens a lot with the Dutch, the Portuguese and the Turks.

Except that doesn't happen. They're founding their capitol in Denmark. (And units are not bouncing back to the Netherlands).

I think part of the problem is Germany seems to always found Hamburg in the 600AD start, but never in the 3000AD start. Which is really weird.

Okay, yeah, that's not normal. I always see them bounce right back.

I bet the city of Mainz in the 600AD start has something to do with it.

Byzantium tends to get one of these two wonders in every 600 AD game I play, Shwedagon Pagoda or Spiral Minerat. I noticed Byzantium typically doesn't build them if you play at a low difficulty level, so I guess if you're shocked that this is happening, you either need to up your difficulty level, or you're destroying/bothering Byzantium before they can go on a short wonder spree.

Out of curiosity, Squirrelloid, did you notice the French, etc., getting Optics/Astronomy very quickly, like you noticed in your Viking game? Were you able to get the South American spices for yourself? Previous threads here on the Dutch seem to suggest that getting the South American spices is the easiest thing in the world. In the 2 games I tried this weekend, the Portuguese beat me to South America long before I could get there, even when beelining Optics and Astronomy.

Oh, and on-topic: I also had a game where my fellas spawned in Denmark. I reloaded one of the autosaves, sat through a few "waiting for other civs", and when it opened up again my guys were in the Netherlands, where they wanted to be.

The french had astronomy by 1300 at the latest. And probably more like 1250. Of course, for whatever reason, they aren't gungho about exploring immediately upon getting it - so i beat them to the new world (at least N America), and took the Aztecs city's. This gave me one of the new world spices. I founded Havana one turn before the Spanish were going to. The Portugese have not been a factor in this game. Now, France did find the Inca first, which means that i probably got beat them to NAm only by beelining to it with my caravel (started immediately after i acquired optics). Also not a factor this game: Germany. Rome made sure of that.

Also, this is on a 3000BC start (i screwed around as the Mayans till the Dutch spawned), and tech rate has been obscene. I'm researching electricity and its 1700. And its actually slowed down a little recently. The Americans are going to be painfully far behind when they spawn - admittedly, i'll help by trading for rifling. I'm currently beelining radio (Cristo Redemptor, yes please), and then grabbing Assembly Line, or possibly in some other order. I have replaceable parts, so i'm only delaying factories to have first shot at the wonders. (And if france continues its current research agenda, i may prioritize factories more). However, to even stay competitive in research i'm deficit researching and selling techs to behind nations to fund it. This is painful.

The game is somewhat bizarre for another reason to. Christianity is mostly defunct. Most of europe is Islamic, though no religion has spread to Amsterdam yet... Rome is Jewish. I think the Christian holy city got destroyed. Turkey is buddhist. Persia is running free religion i think. And bizarrely enough, Christianity just spread in Havana and Tikal (Mayan). So currently it looks like the Mayans are the only Christian nation. I'm so utterly confused as to what's going on with religion in this game.
