[BUG] Is there a max number of cities? (crashing on city #64)

I can't acquire a 64th city. (I know, I know, I'm playing it like Civ 4 having that many) but I'm wondering if I'm the only one. This is my first real game and so I don't know if it is some memory limit or some other fault.

My civilization has 63 cities and when I either try to found a new one, or capture one, I get a crash to desktop. I've included a save game with 63 cities and 2 settlers ready to settle, and a nice little army ready to conquer. Both give me the CTD.

Can anyone confirm?

Version 1.0.0.20

I have also modified the CIV5GameSpeeds.xml - not sure if that is significant.

And welcome to CFC :).

Haha. Thanks, but I've been lurking since civ2.

I've tried several different ways to get my extra city, so if someone else has problems it might be a limit on number of cities worldwide maybe? If so, I think it is extremely poor form for firaxis to set the limit to less than 2048 or so.

Can anyone reproduce my CTD?

I was one of the ones who submitted a savegame with a crash on the 70th. Several other people reported a crash on the 70th as well. That's interesting then that yours crashes consistently on a different number...

How much RAM and video RAM do you have?

I've got 512MB video RAM, and 4GB system RAM.

If I were programming civ5, I would have put all the cities in one database rather than a separate database for just the player, so it would be hard coded to number of cities in the world rather than the player. But I have no idea how firaxis did it.

At any rate, if this is an actual hard coded number then I don't really want to play civ5 anymore :(. And I'll tell my friends to not bother buying it until this is fixed. I'll come back when someone shows me it's my systems fault, or this is fixed.

Seems this is a bigger problem, there are 2 threads about this here, one at 2K, one in the german forum.

From the 2K forums (Link):
After reading some posts it seems if more than 69 cities are connected via trade, the game crashes. It may be possible to get over 69 cities if they are not "connected".

I'm still on my first game. Currently, I'm on turn 1013 (huge/marathon) with 66 cities. Yes, I like big empires. I'm at war with another civ. No matter what I do, the game would crash to the desktop if I just take one more city! I have 3 of the enemy civ's cities surrounded with my units. No matter which one I take, even before the annex/puppet/raze dialog appears, the game would crash as soon as I move any of my units into any of these cities. If I don't take any city, then I can still go on with the game.

Is there some kind of technical limit (memory whatever) on the number of cities I can have? I tried this on two different computers with the same save game, and they just behave the same way.

Merging of the threads makes sense.

It seems odd that the game would crash just because I take control of the 67th city -- the number of cities in the game world doesn't change, only the ownership of one does. The number-of-trade-connections theory may have some validity.

The bottom line is, as it currently stands it's impossible to play through this save game unless I refrain from taken or founding another city.

My most frequent ctd have been just after capturing a city. So far if i reload the last auto save and do exactly the same thing the crash has never been repeated. Haven't had a same turn save to try yet. I don't think i've ever gotten over ~40 cities either. Maybe 50. I've had ctd capturing an ai city with a very small empire.

Does founding a new city also cause the crash? Also curious if you still get the crash if you play forward from your most recent auto save.

Greetings! This problem also happened to me. And I think it very sad to happen.

If there is a possibility we can win a huge world, why there is a limit. The towns are spaced to each other.

No way around this?
There are enemies to destroy, and cities to conquer (mandatory) is to be no way to arrange this.

The new patches do not solve this problem? No way to influence Civ Creators to change this problem?
Or we must change our thinking to "Civilization 5 - Where we can win only half of the world?"

Did you start a new game after patching? The patch won't work on saved games.

As a work-around, try razing some of your existing captured cities to stay below the limit. Far from ideal, but it should let you continue the game.
