I won the space race fairly early, so I decided to go back (load an autosave) and conquer the globe. Well, I'm almost there, but as I'm conquering & razing cities I find I can't build railroads in some squares.

It started out only happening a long way from my borders, so I thought it was a limitiation. However, it just happened inside the borders of a city I captured. This has to be a bug!!!

The build railroad icon doesn't appear and SHIFT+R does nothing. Moving across these squares does cost movement though.

Has anyone heard of this?

I think this hapens when you do not have roads connecting the cities. Once you control a road to that square, I think you can build a railroad.

to build railroads, you must have a source of coal and iron connected to your capital. If this doesn't work, try getting a road to the tile you want a railroad connected to a coal and iron trade road.

The whole continent is covered in roads (the AI did a good job there). And I can build railroads in some squares, but not in others. Sometimes the squares I can't build rails in change after a turn.

I'm trying to build rails to front lines to move my troops. I can build a few squares, but then the workers just can't build in some squares.

same kinda thing happened to me...

was womping the enemy, my three transports of marines took 3 cities. i raised 2 and built an airport in one to bring over more troops and rampaged through the land raising every city on the way using captured workers to quickly build railroad to the next enemy city.

i finally got to a point where i couldn't build railroad anymore... think is was a distance from city thing...

Actually, it's not that you need iron (or other resources) at your capital to build railroads .. you need to have them connected to the tile you're building the railroad on. This actually makes better sense if you think about it. I found this to be the case, when trying to build railroads on islands which were part of a city's sphere of influence, but without connections to other cities with harbors.

If you can't build a railroad, it's probably because you have no way of getting the necessary resources to the tile you're building on.

I'll be more specific. I have the resources avail able to build railroads 5 coal and 4 iron. There is only one continent. The part of the continent I'm conquering has been entirely covered by roads. Also, I am able to build railroads in most squares.

dutcheese - I'm glad I'm not the only one who's seen this problem. I'm just not sure if it's a limitation or a BUG.

You playing on a huge or large map? Perhaps there are too many railroads on the map that it won't go any higher.

Do you notice a pattern with the squares that you can't build in (i.e. top left corner of the original city radius)? Is your mobilization set to "War-Time" instead of "Normalcy?" If so, change it to Normalcy, War-Time prevents building some things. Lastly, are the squares that you can't build in all in one area or spread out (i.e. in a 9x9 square area, four of the squares don't work)? If it's all in a certain area (i.e. a certain part of the map) then it might be a bug or glitch (i.e. an error in generating the map at the beginning of the game.

If it's anything like that, it's fixable. You could start a new game (i.e. Cheiftain huge) and see if it prevents you from building railroads then. Hope this helps (i.e. you get some use for it).

Later (i.e. goodbye, hope I helped).
