I am a Alien Crossfire fanatic but I never tried call to power. Is it any good? Do we learn much more about the characters? Are there any new technologies? Which is the most recent release SMAX or CtP?

The North American release date for SMAC is February 1998.

The release date for SMAX is September 1999.

The release date for Call to Power is March 1999.

From the link above,

A review by Niko Nirvi in the May 1999 issue of Pelit gave Call to Power a score of 85%, describing it as a successful but overly clinical variant of Civilization II with a number of new features bolted on. He was disappointed by the interface and by an overly conspicuous dodging of the old series' assets: Civilization features inventing the wheel, so in Call to Power stirrups are invented instead. He was impressed by some of the innovations, particularly trade routes, stacked combat, units from future time periods and special units from spies to televangelists that can be used without a formal declaration of war. His biggest complaints were a crucial lack of immersion and an underwhelming diplomacy system. Nirvi had enjoyed the impression of distinct character personalities in Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, and noted that in Call to Power it makes no difference whether one's facing Spain or Russia. Nirvi summarized by writing that Call to Power will be allowed to hang out at the same bar as Civs and Alpha Centauri, but will have to buy them drinks.

Please note that while CtP goes from the Ancient Age to the year 3000 (which includes both Civ and SMAC time periods), it is much closer to being a Civ variant than a SMAC variant.

The characters are like Civ, not like SMAC.

As for technology, from the last link,

Space fighters and space planes can freely travel in space and in the atmosphere. While the SWARM warrior can survive in space as well as the earth, it cannot launch itself into space. There are also some units that exist in space exclusively (i.e. cannot make a re-entry into the atmosphere) such as the Star Cruiser, the Phantom and the Space Bomber.

You might try asking your question in the Call to Power Series subforum at CFC.

actually i liked call to power - i found it rather easy to play, but i lost interest in no time since it seemed easy to go well into the future - cant remember if it was on the amiga as well? or was it pc? in eather format i did like that game - think ive still got it somewhere collecting dust, or possible housing a lonesome spider who has seen better days.

I like Call to Power 2 better, but get the patch from the Apolyton site, and it makes it a good game. Vanilla sucks unfortuanltly but the guys at Apoltyon did a remarkable job in fixing it.

I love that I don't have to worry about putting the guys on every tile square, and you have I forget the name now, work points or something like that to make your tiles better, into farms, roads, mines etc. No more workers to worry about either. Pubic Works points I think they are called.
