I live in sydney australia but i should be able to find some local equivalent if you are overseas. Usually they have almost as good a system for a lot more money as you would get in america, say.

I'm looking at upgrading as i am playing civ4 and i suspect it runs out of ram all the time. I am told it's due to sloppy coding.

I've checked around but can't find anything decent. Can anyone recommend a cheapish upgrade? I can keep peripherals although my gf wants a new monitor (i am happy to keep this one).

If i had unlimited funds i would go for 4 gig ram but as near as possible would be lovely.

Civ4 can't cope with dual cores etc and despite my pleas, Firaxis isn't interested in patching it to support multicore systems, so quad or dual core might be pointless. I suppose the athlon64 might be good but then i'd have to buy a totally new operating system, just when vista is about due to be released! I am stuffed if i know whether to wait or buy now and hope for the best.

The power supply or motherboard is dodgy on this system and it's crashing so i have got to do something but i will wait a month or two if i have to.

i suspect the seller might have used a PS that is falsely labeled for wattage but i can't prove it, apparently it's a big scam according to the newspaper. They label it according to whether it can deliver a peak output briefly, not what it can sustain.

I attached the system info it it helps (remove .txt to decompress).

I have a dvd burner that i am happy with but i guess the rest is obsolete (geforce4 ti4200 and an old type of ram). I don't know if my hard drive can be re-used but it has 30 gig unused so it seems ridiculous to throw it away. The shops insist no, but i can't tell if they are just trying to sell new stock. I can't see what type it is.

I probably need UPS as the power supply to my apartment is poor. We get brownouts, and the power dims, and if my computer is on it turns off, and otherwise you can see the t.v. might lose reception for a second or even the fuse might trip. I have a surge protector but that won't help if the power is dipping, from what i understand.

If anyone has any suggestions, please post a reply, and may you have a lovely christmas!

I'm not really interested in anything apart from modded civ4, alas. I used to love the Everquest type games but they tend to discourage soloing (and encourage gold farmers in 3rd world countries) and i seem to spend my free time in notepad+ or gimp when i'm not gaming.

Linux is used for essay writing etc so it's requirements are low. I've probably put too much info below but i guess it's easy to search for relevant strings. The power supply is unlabeled as far as i can see but i don't trust it anyway.

Yes, i actually have a legal copy of win xp sp2, and make that claim knowing i am one of the few people i have met who actually bought every version of windows from the dos 5 days. Even windows ME

I recently upgraded to a dual core CPU, and I can tell you that they're far from useless with Civ 4. All of the various background processes get offloaded to the other core, while Civ gets a core all to itself. Although the CPU clock speed was only 400MHz higher, the performance improvement was much more than I was expecting with single-threaded games.

As for what you should get, let me suggest some reading material. You can either order these various parts through online web sites and build your own system (it's more fun that way anyway), or you can use these as a guide to figure out which parts to upgrade (say, if you want to just update the motherboard, CPU, RAM and if necessary video card while leaving everything else).

PS -- if you choose the do-it-yourself route I've recommended, read customer reviews on specific models before purchasing a Power Supply Unit. These days even good brands occasionally produce duds.

As far as im concerned at moment Intel core 2 duo cheapest chip and lots of ram is answer for quick civ 4 if your hell bent on a new pc. Then upgrade chip to quad core chip at later date. AMD is in catch up mode at present. Reviews claim the new intel chip is up to 40% faster on some tests then the old pentium 4 and gives the AMD offerings a fair bashing too.

Personally I would upgrade ram to 1gb before i jump up to a dual/quad core chip. Do you buy a new pc cause one game wont work? Pending on athlon chip you might be able to upgrade the cpu to a faster chip. Friend upgraded a 1400 athlon to a 2700 model. Ebay is always good for finding old amd chips. Worth looking up what your motherboard will take. Dont spend hundreds!!!

If the machine is dying a death with many parts on the brink of dying perhaps cut your losses and get a new machine. Although cost to upgrade ram and processor would be small compared to a new pc if you know what to buy. If you can wait 6 months you will be able to get a mainstream Intel quad core chip.

Just be careful you dont buy a pc that is obselete in terms of latest technology. EG pentium D dual core chips. They may be cheap but come Q1 2007 they will be shelved.

Hope that helps.

I honestly don't know what the hullaballoo is about those quad core chips. At the moment, the vast majority of games are single threaded, and for single threaded games, AMD still beats Intel (or at least is competitive with, depending on the game), quad core or not. Quad core is a big deal for people who compress a lot of large files, do multimedia editing, or 3D rendering, but for most of us there really isn't much difference between quad core and dual core yet.

The Inter quad-core is not native quad-core. It is two dual-core chips stuck together. Don't believe all the Intel BS, and it is BS. Their marketing department really does kick some arse in getting people to buy their products.

Besides, Intel still relies on the antiquated Front-Side-Bus. They have no plans on changing this until 2009, earliest.
