Can great works be pillaged?

Thinking of building an amphitheater on a coast. Should I be worried about it being pillaged by barbs/players? What happens if it is pillaged while holding a great work?

The Theater and all buildings may be pillaged but the great works remain.
If you want them, take the city, move em out, then give the city back.

I wonder why that wasn't shut off at the same time that trading tiles from captured cities was disallowed? Would appear to be analogous situations.

Have they changed Civ VI so you can conquer Great Works?

In earlier versions of the game, Great Works were permanently destroyed if the city was taken. That even applied to Great Works in your Palace / Capital City. They weren't spirited away to your new Palace, they were just gone.

I know you can take over great works on capturing cities but not sure on the conditions. Guessing that they will stay in the city if the original owner doesn't have room anywhere else.

I think they are destroyed only if you can't store them. Which can happen if a UB with an extra slot (or simply a palace) is conquered and you are already stacked out.

Just be careful if it is a tile that can be flooded by ice cap melting. Theater squares can and will flooded which will result in losing all the artifacts/great works if you don't move them out in time.
