By "destroy", I mean eliminate them from existence. I know they obliterate the target's defenses and reduce its population, but I'm wondering if it's possible to wipe a city from the face of the earth via nuclear warfare.

This is a size 20 city after 17 Thermonuclear detonations. It was on 1 for quite a while, so I'm gonna guess that's as far as it goes:

Thanks for the confirmation. It's a bummer that cities can't be wiped out, as I was hoping to win a "Nuclear Victory" (annihilating everyone else via nukes). Oh well.

Nukes are only a means to that apocalyptic ending, after all.

Now, I'm surprised to see that Encampment unscathed after 17 nukes. That's some serious defense. Maybe it's reinforced with that heavily mutated Fur...

Nukes destroy units, prevent AI units from being moved in the area, and allow any unit to instantly capture the city. If the fallout is in the city hex then it also prevents the city from spawning most units, including workers required to clear the fallout.

Nukes won't destroy hex resources or improvements. Same for buildings and wonders, just leaves them pillaged and ready for use again after capture..
