Canceling a trade

I have read several posts about canceling a trade. However I have not been able find anything on the mechanics on how to do this. This is a problem in multiplayer as when I trade with another human, the trade never ends, even when I have the 'Always renegotiate deals' is selected in preferences. Even when the number of turns in the Details window is no longer listed the trade still is listed and will not stop.

The only solution that I have been able to implement is to declare war and then immediately go to peace. Is there any other way besides this to cancel a trade? Is there any way to cancel a trade BEFORE the number of turns the trade has to last without going to war?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Open diplomacy with the civ in question, click on "Active" at the bottom of the screen - all presently running deals with that civ. Simply simply click on everything to remove all, or renegotiate the deals as normal.

If you select "always renegotiate deals", does that mean every 20 turns you will always have the deal renegotiated, and therefore have no chance to peacefully cancel it except every 20 turns?

Yes, I think you're right. Should wait for 20th turn. But it's still better than do it only by geting in war with Civ that you trade (in bad deal) with, or never.
