Cannot load saved game

Hi everyone,

I just bought a civ4 pack with extensions,
the thing is I cannot load any kind of game I saved, which is a huge issue for this game
If I try to load a game from the main menu, it will just close the browsing window as if I hit cancel, whether I click ok or double click on the save file doesnt change a thing, i tried with both normal saved file and autosaved, same error
then if I try to load a game from the ingame menu, it will just go back to the main menu.
The saved files I try to load always belong to the extension I am using,
also I tested all the extensions, and I always have the same problem

I use Vista32b (Korean) with a Korean computer but so far the fact it is korean has never been a problem.

I hear your frustration as I have been having the same issue for weeks now! Oh, BTW, don't even BOTHER contacting Firaxis customer support, which sends you to the UK call center, those guys are totally useless. I have been fighting with them for nearly three weeks now and they haven't a clue! I finally had to file a complaint against them with the Better Business Bureau insisting that they refund ALL of my money for ALL of the Civ IV games on the basis of a faulty product (bad programming) and inadequate customer service (the one idiot from Firaxis said to delete all my saved games and just start from scratch....yeah, right! NOT!!!).

When it crashes to the desktop, I get this Windows error message:

I have attached a saved game for you to checkout if you are up to solving this mystery.

Visually, everything looks fine, BUT...if you click on the log event icon it will crash. If you end your turn and go through just one cycle, you will lose the GUI of having any information surrounding the play field. No money amount, no date, no year, etc... If you double click on a city to get detailed city info, it has all disappeared. (I've included two pix for you to look at) If you click on the "display toggle scores" when all of the GUI is gone, it will not work. If you try to do a manual save, it will crash. HOWEVER, if you let the system do an autosave, it somehow magically fixes itself and makes it all reappear, but again just for one cycle until you end your turn.

On the second saved game I have attached (autosave), if you cycle through the game several times, it will just up and crash on its own.

I've also included the DXDIAG report, just in case.

your windows xp is not updated - if there is no good reason not to do it I would recommend installing service pack 3
your graphics driver is seriously outdated (it is from the same time the original game was released - since then the graphics engine has changed considerably with patches and expansion packs).

xp update - i did the SP3 update quite a ways back and I did not like its performance on my system, so I rolled it back and did a "pick and choose" update on components I felt where beneficial to my rig.

graphics driver - I spoke to ATI in great detail about this gaming problem and the engineer arrived at the same conclusion that I did (based on what I told him), that a driver update was not going to do much to improve card stability or playability. Plus, I have tried newer drivers in the past and found that they did not work as well as some of the older drivers.

The odd thing about all of this is: Colonization works just fine and it is way newer than Civ IV: BTS - if graphics drivers and Windows updates were really the issues then they would have also affected Colonization play - secondly, BTS was stable and worked fine before I installed the 3.19 patch. And yes, before you say - "just roll it back to 3.17 then", I tried that and when I do that I can't even open the saved games that were created under 3.19 because of Firaxis' short-sightedness to change the save engine from 301 to 302 - another case of idiocy at Firaxis.

Oddly again, I have many newer games than BTS and I have no issues with them graphically or system wise. They work fine and without fault.

It is strange that I would be the only one having this problem, reinstalling civ didnt help.

Found a solution, I post it here if someone happens to get the same proeblem someday...
I can load the game from windows by clicking on the savegame file, this works.

I'm having the same problem, and I can't even load the saves by opening them directly. Can anyone help me? :/

I solved it, albeit a very annoying solution.

I made a new account on my laptop without Korean characters and I can load saves now... I read a similar solution to a Red Alert 3 problem I have. Sigh...

If you guys have another solution, I'd be glad to hear it. I wouldn't want to keep swapping accounts for civ 4.
