I just bought CIV IV from Target yesterday, and installed it. When I put in disk 1 to play it comes up with the "Cannot Locate the CD-ROM / Please Insert the Correct CD-ROM" message. Even though that is the CORRECT play disk (i know they are mislabled). I even tried the other disk to be certain and it didnt work either. I really want to play it but it just wont work. I run Windows XP and meet all system requirments. What should I do?

use the one labeled install disk. If that doesn't work try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I tried both disks and have uninstalled and reinstalled a grand total of 5 times now. Anything else I can do to fix it?

To play, try putting in the disc and running it and see if that prompts you to play (rather than launching from the desktop).

good luck
Ok. Just tried it and it didnt work either. Any other ideas anyone?

First, try tech support. I had to call them just to get the game installed, and they were friendly and helpful. They've probably had a bunch of people call with the same problem and know the most common fixes.

If they run out of ideas, I would suggest closing everything that is running in the background. There are certain types of programs that will prevent Civ IV from running if they are active.

EDIT: If tech support is able to solve your problem, please do let us know what worked for you.

Ok. I will try that later today. If they cant hep the disk is probably defective. Thanks everyone, I will let you know what turns out.

If you search the forum (here and Civ4 tech support) there are a whole load of threads on this issue. The issue is often with SafeDisk, the copy protection system that Civ 4 uses. Make sure that you have installed from the lowest lettered CD drive and are putting the disc in the same drive, check the firmware of your CD and see if there is an updated version available, have you got any programs running such as CloneCD, Alcohol, Daemon Tools? if so you may have to uninstall them to play, sometimes even Nero is objected to. If you search there are a lot of other potential solutions to this problem, hopefully one will work for you.
