Can't see units/cities

I have played with Vanilla for a month or so then decided to buy the complete version.

The installation went fine, but when I started playing on BTS - I just don't see units or cities. At all.
I can select my settler by clicking on his square (which I have to guess for) and click on settle.
After that even my city isn't there. After double clicking I can see the city screen with all the things on it, but in the normal game mode I just can't see a thing.
In Warlords and Vanilla it works fine, but not on BTS.
Help anyone?

in the lower right hand corner (above the minimap) there is a row of buttons - one of them toggles the bare map mode on and off - that should fix it
