Can't trade maps / contact?

I just installed Civ III Complete, and after a game or two where everything worked fine, now I don't seem to be able to trade maps or 'contacts' at all, even after all civs are well into the middle ages.

A couple of questions to make sure I'm not missing something:

- 2 civs can trade maps when both have mapmaking?

- Contact between civs can occur after both civs acquire which science?

It was map making for civ 3 vanilla, but it was changed in conquests.

Thanks - I guess I wasn't able to trade them 'cause I didn't have the necessary techs. As it says in the bible "D'oh".
