Caravans with Food Supplies rather than commodities.

Hi all,

This Q has been in the back of my mind for a while and now that I have just gone back to playing vanilla Civ 2 it has prompted me to raise it in this forum.

I love using caravans to build Wonders. However, I never get the Caravans to bring across important commodities like Dye, Wine amd Cotton etc. Instead I get them to bring food.

What is the implication for the city building the caravan where food is being taken from? How much food and does it actually dissappear from stores?

What is the implication for the city receiving the caravan of food?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For a Caravan bringing Food and establishing a food route:

-The destination immediately gets half of its total food capacity filled (not sure if there's any penalty for the departure city).
-The destination gets 1 extra Food per turn, which is deducted from the city that built the Caravan

Also, a city can only have one food route with another city, so if you deliver another Caravan, the city will still only get 1 extra fpt. However, both give an immediate bonus to the city's existing stockpiles.

Hope this helps, and if anyone else wishes to correct me or elaborate further, then they're more than welcome to :)

I believe that one city can have more than one food route with another city, but this might only be possible through the use of the CivCity editor. One city can have up to three food routes going out and three coming in.

Also, food routes will not be destroyed if an AI captures a city in the food route chain. In order for the chain to be broken one of the two cities must be destroyed. Though, it is possible to use a third city as an intermediary city for the exchange of food. Destroying the intermediary city will break the chain and keep the two other cities intact.

If you are only using the caravans to build Wonders there is no impact whatsoever on the building city. You must have a wonder selected for production before the caravan enters the city or you will not get the extra option in the selection list to contribute the caravan to the building. When you build a caravan of food, nothing changes in the building city. If it is delivered to create a "food route", then there is an impact on the building city. However, when you build a caravan of an unblocked supply commodity (except Hides), that supply will then be blocked (marked in parenthesis) until a Solo Cycle or an unblocking event refreshes the supply commodity list.
