It's a LG CG-romcrd-8483B, and it said it is working correctly.

Please answer quick, if this doesn't work I'm getting Rise of Nations tonight, then just ordering Civ. II on Ebay.

Okay, now I can't even get to the installation screen it says I/O Device error, what do i do?

How old is this CDROM? I found a driver for it, but its for win 98!

Try getting the new driver from here.

Unzip the zip file to a directory on your hard-drive. Go and 'update driver' like you tried yesterday, and when given the option, choose 'specify a location', and browse to the directory where you unzipped the zip file. It should find it.

Well the driver didn't work, and I appreciete all of your help but im getting ready to go to take it back (and replace it with Rise of Nations) and i found a copy of Civ II. Thank you anyway ainwood.

well the computer was bought in 2001 (same year as Civ. III) so i dont know why i wont work. Oh yeah, i couldn't take it back because it's a fedral law that they can't so I'm out $40. PLEASE HELP ME GET IT WORKING. $40 is alot of money (to me at least)

Well, I'll try to help you!

Firstly, they can spout on about federal law all they want, but if the disk is defective, then they are required to replace it. Can you check the disk by trying to install it on someone elses PC?

Do you have any other games that you can try installing (or even reinstalling)? This might prove whether it is a problem with your CD-ROM drive or not.

I intalled Extreme Paintbrawl (crappy game) and they have already replaced it, I'm stuck with it so I really want it to work. Now the only thing that I can think of is that the system requirements say Pentium II, and i have an AMD atholon, However it is a much more powerful processor that Pentium II.

2. That error has to do with the rewrite drive
Do you have CD Drive and a re-write drive? If so, do you get errors trying to install from the re-write drive as well?

4. Yes, I actully went in and returned for a new copy of it, it still does not work.
Ah - OK. They exchanged it and it still didn't work. :(

I have an athlon - it works fine and mine's only a 1 GHz. :)

Yes it's seperate, can I install through a RW-drive?

Okay I really don't know if you were serious or not but it worked, I am very grateful for all of your help. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I was serious. CDROM stands for 'Compact Disk Read-Only Memory'. Basically, you can read programs off it, but you can't write new ones to it. A CD RW means 'Compact Disk Read-Write'. As well as reading files from it, you can write ones to it.

As a bit of side-info, because you can write data to a CD RW, people use them for software piracy etc. For that reason, companies often put 'copy protection software' in a game, which can cause problems (and has for civ). If you get any problems where you try to start the game and it says 'please put the CDROM into the drive', this is due to the copy protection software.

Good luck, and I'm glad it worked in the end. :D

This seems to be an old problem, as all the threads I have seen for it are dated 2004/2005, but there still seems to be no real solution for it. Everytime I try and install CIV III on my computer I get the following error message at 6%:

Component: CD_ROOT_FILES_PROTECTED
File Group: CS Root Files [English]
File: E:\Sounds\build\ancient\AncNAe.wav
Error: The device is not ready

This happens everytime at 6%. The game disk I have, I bought about 5 years ago, and it is still in near perfect condition. The game worked perfectly on my last computer, which ran windows XP. My current labtop is running Vista. I have already checked all the registry values associated with Civ3 and my driver is running properly.

PLEASE HELP!
