This thread is for discussion of our alliances with the Chinese vs. the Persians. Both our RoP and alliance will end in 4 turns. We have 3 options here, only two of which make any sense.

1. End the alliance. This would allow us to make peace with Persia if we wanted, because our other alliances with them can be cancelled at any time.

2. Renegotiate the alliance. We are paying them 16gpt at the moment, but this would likely allow us to sign an even agreement, or even get them to pay us.

3. Leave the alliance as is. This one is included only because it is technically an option. I would bet real life money that we will get a better deal by renegotiating.;)

I recommend that we renegotiate, as the alliance serves several purposes: it keeps the Chinese on our side, and keeps the Persians in check. There is little reason to sign a peace treaty with the Persians, as they do not actually threaten us, but while at war they provide a target for our more aggressive neighbors other than us.

I agree, I feel we need to renegotiate. China is a perfect buffer state against Persia and it is also nice to have friendly neighbors. However, if ever we go into Republic or Democracy we need to end the alliance and make peace because of war weariness. Otherwise I'm all for renegotiation.

I want to renegotiate.

But if they want more money to keep the alliance, what would we do?

I'm not sure... I don't want to pay more for this alliance.

I think we should end the alliance (and the Phony Persian War). (Surprise!)

We should be planning our next war right now. If we must have the Chinese as allies shouldn't we have them as allies in a real war? Since we're not ready for our next war yet I suggest we just maintain the status quo until ready for the next war. Once our target is selected and we're ready for attack we can then seek an alliance with China against our chosen enemy and then end the alliance against Persia.

By renegotiating we lock ourselves into another 20 turns of war unnecessarily. If this war must continue let's at least retain the flexibility to end it when we want.

Is this war costing us in some way that I am missing?

Ending the alliance only takes the pressure off of Persia, which allows them (as well as all our allies) to retool and rebuild their militaries also. I say we keep the alliances going which will keep all these other nations busy fighting each other, while we quietly rebuild our military for our next libaration action.

We should, of course, renegotiate the deals wherever possible. It is quite likely that since China is committed to this campaign already, the cost for continuing this alliance will drop dramatically.

Do we really think that Chinese units are actually engaging Persian units? There are some riders near Balitimore and they can move 3 per turn but they are still only half way to Persia! The biggest cost of this Phony War is that it prevents us from addressing our military as we should be. Only 16 of our 46 cities are currently working on military improvements or military units. I think the strategy of allying with our neighbors has contributed to our military weakness by giving us a (false?) sense of security.

I beleve we should renegotiate an alliacne with the chinese. We can possibly get a tech deal out of it, if we play our cards right.

We need to renegociate this alliance as we don't want to have those riders that are mentionned above against us, with the others that surely wait near our territory. This alliance does not simply put pressure upon Xerxes, it also lift some of that pressure away from us as we do not have to deal with an agressive and strong southern neighbor.

As for that false security sentiment, we can still begin a defensive planning against any chinese invasion during those 20 turns of peace with them.
