Circumnavigation

AND...

You get the +1 movement on Work Boats.

This might seem insignificant, but you can build a new boat and get it out to any of your Big Fat Cross squares and turned into a tile-worker in one turn instead of having to wait till the next turn.

Okay, it probably is insignificant, but it's still a "nice to have".

LOL, awesome

*funniest post ever*

Fishing boats are the way to go, usually they can make it, build one near the start and send it completely around your continent until another landmass is in sight, cheap not its intended use, but in the high likelyhood that it eventually makes the trip, you will be the first for sure
Depends what type of map you play on. Generally, on the huge maps it's very rare that you'll have the other continents all close enough to send a work boat around the world (unless you're specifically tailoring the map settings to encourage that ability).

Everything in civ "depends". Even if the continents aren't side-by-each, it helps to have your native one outlined. Workboats, galleys, and triremes all get that job done identically, workboats are just cheaper. The native outline can be a huge head start when you send off your round-the-world caravels, even if you're not the first one to launch them.

Does the AI explicitly attempt circumnavigation? The maps I've bought always show it to be a bit of an accident, with paths bumbling north and south and nowhere fast, always showing the round-the-world route as a very indirect one indeed.

I've noticed the same thing, which leads me to suspect as well that the AI doesn't intentionally go for circumnavigation. Oh well, makes it easier for the human player. :)

why yes, this was a landlocked, one-city challenge ;)

those freshwater fishermen are TOTALLY psyched now!

lol, it should be +1 movement for ground forces if you c-nav by land, although that would be seriously overpowered. Imagine Riflemen with 2 moves! It's strange how c-nav isn't in the civopedia or as a 'challenge' when you discover optics (or whatever unlocks caravels, I'm too lazy to lok it up :P) eg. "you can now c-nav the globe for +1 movement!" or something like that.

the best war to get it online is to trade maps with most people filling ur world map view but only get the map of hte last person not give him urs that will mean the bonus will only be urs...
