Wheelville will produce a settler in 7 turns or less but we should decide on a location much sooner so we can get defenders in position.

Links busted, check post #8 below.
4 spots look pretty good to me:
1. Clam city will be able to work 4 hills and can borrow Wheelvile's pig to grow quickly.
2. Sugar city can make good money.

3. Marble city has marble which may be a valuable resource if we plan to use it.

4. Sheep city will have decent growth and production.

I'd say sheep city first, we can do those cities in the south once we have calendar.

I just thought we would build some cottages, What's it cost but a gold or two?

In 15 turns or so our prophet can build the cathedral thing (+2 gold at least)
In 3 turns we'll finish 2 cottages
In 6-8 turns we'll have a trade route to Sinsburg

Can you make those screenshots any smaller? I can almost see what's going on there. Can't have any of that.

BTW, dave has a good point. Too many cities in this game can wreck your economy.

I guess they should work as links, but they don't.

Anyone wants to set up a test-game to check how much impact a new city will have?

Well, in a current game I'm playing I have 4 cities at about the same distance as we would have ours, and I'm paying 7 gold for city maintenance and 1 for civic upkeep.

New and improved post. Now with pictures that link!

I'd say marble city. The first two can always be built later as they are behind us, and sheep city only gives one resource, compared to marble city which gives three (including a sheep).

I guess the question is: What do we need more? The resources, the food sources, or cash.

Now realize I am a real Civ IV newbie, but I think we might need the resources more. I think Marble City

Marble will be very useful for: Hermitage, Heroic and National epics, Great Library, Hagia Sophia, Parthenon, Sistine Chapel, Taj Mahal and Versailles, but otherwise is just an extra hammer and two gold.

If those are not on our “to do list” Marble city has little to offer, commerce and production possibilities are limited and growth will be slow.

Note: Just realized when scrolling down to click the links that a short version of this analysis was already posted. Oh well, can't hurt I guess... ;)

Sugar City: with 3 tiles at +2 food (sugar+plantation) and every other tile in the 21 squares giving at least 2 food after a lighthouse is built, this future metropolis can eventually grow to size 24, if we can get the happieness and heath that high. It won't produce any hammers to speak of, so we'd better plan on pop rushing everything built here.

Clam City: 4 mined hills will give us 12 hammers, and the +4 food from improved clams and sugar lets us work all 4. This is nothing to write home about, but with appropriate building support it's not bad. Sharing the pigs back and forth with the capitol would let it go through feast & famine cycles if we find that to be useful.

Marble City: Leaving the forests for future lumber mills and irrigating the plains yields a city which can produce around 19 hammers fully developed. This would be one of our more productive cities, though civil service is needed before most of the land can be worked.

Sheep City: 13 hammers, can grow to near the max with lighthouse

Over by the silks is also fruitful looking. A city which got all 4 inside the fat + would get 16g from those 4 tiles alone. That might be enough to consider razing the barb town and relocating it, given the higher bonuses from concentrating gold in a city and adding multiplier buildings.

First two can be done later when we've got Calendar.
Marble sounds good.
We should explore the sea near the sheep to check out if there are resources there that might make it better. Speaking of which, when will we get ourselves a galley?

True but overly optimistic for my tastes. Many PBEM's never make it to Replaceable parts, so lumbermills might not be a factor, also the food situation means only 5 land tiles can be worked. So hammer production will a little less than Sheep city, although Sheep city will grow faster and produce more gold. (Sheep city may also cost 1 less in distance upkeep.)

Maybe later, but for now I'd like to build someplace that will be of more immediate use like Sheep or Clam city.

EDIT: I'll run some tests in worldbuilder this afternoon.

The wife is out of town, the kid is sick, not enough snow to do anything with and I just finised my book. The perfect day to spend too much time playing Civ. Here is what Marble, Sheep and Clam sites may look like after being improved.

Keep in mind these pictures are from a totaly different game! Save included if you care.

Since we have no plans to use Marble I say lets build Sheep city first.

From those examples Clam city looks best, but it won't be that big anytime soon because of :health: and :) issues. Still, Clam city might be best just because it saves a bit of distance maintenance.

Clam sounds good, and it won't need much protection either.

I vote for settling Marble City in the not-too-distant future (though it'll need a fair garrison against all those barbs which could spawn to the north). If it's not our fourth city, it *needs* to be our fifth. Clam City is probably the best short-term site, but we have to keep in mind that marble will be a necessity for grabbing the Great Library - which should really be one of our top priorities right now, since our GNP is so low. If we're not careful we could fall into a technological rut where we get further and further behind everyone else, unable to trade since the only techs we can research are ones that everybody else already has. That's a situation we don't ever want to have!! ;)

If we were to go for Literature straight after Alphabet (which is not such a bad idea especially since it is a cheap tech), then I would absolutely advise settling the Marble City fourth, *not* fifth. We also need to allow time to connect up the Marble and build a route to it with our Workers, so there'd be no time to waste even then.

Do we have the production anywhere to build the Great Library soon?
