Is it a big no-no to build cities on special resource tiles?

In my recent game I founded a city on a tile that has copper. On city screen I only got +1 hammer from copper, but I am missing out +3 hammer with mining. I acn not have my worker to work on it either - because it's a city tile now.

Can't remember what's like in Civ III, but any workaround to this?
(I tried to mine the copper, then build the city, but doesn't work)

While you won't get the added benefit of mining the resource, it can never be pillaged by invading armies unless they actually conquer the city.

This was answered by Sulla in the thread about his walkthrough. IIRC in a MP it can be beneficial to protect your resource, but the downside is you can't work the tile. So, it depends on the game situation.

did you get the resource copper? Because to get it, you have to mine it. I don't know if building a city on it would be considered as mining it at the same time...

What sucks is when you can't help it... when you found a city in a seemingly great spot and then later discover something like aluminum under it. I see it happen to the AI pretty often but so far not to me

Also, building a city on top of a resource can add cuteness. I loved my city having an elephant walking around in it. I was really surprised by that, having expected the resource to vanish.

I don't see much tactical use in doing it, though, since important stuff like Iron and such you would need to mine to get access to, no?

If you build a city on iron, you would have access to iron automatically, given you have Mining.

Ah, it allows access like that? Superb, now there is an incentive to build your city on a uranium deposit!

You get the resource but you don't get the bonuses that go with working the tile. On the other hand, you have a city protecting it.
