Over the years I have been slowly adding city names to this file. This minimizes duplicate city names during the course of play. Is there any interest in having a city.txt file added to the download section?

Rather than one file, we could have a city file for each civilization. Of course you would then have to do a cut and paste to get the names into the city.txt file. Having a separate city file for each civilization would allow greater flexibility in adding city names.

Recently I have started to question the wisdom of accepting the suggested names (and making new ones up randomly when the system starts repeating itself).

Now, I try to name the cities on each land mass around a theme. My homeland gets the suggested names. Other islands/conitnents each get their own theme. For example, in the current GOTM I have chosen Roman names for all the cities I have added in the Roman continent after taking over Romans. Another land mass is named after cities by the Caspian sea...

This helps me remember where a city is when dealing with a list such as supply/demand or airports.

After running out of city names, I usually select the names of adjoing cities where I live. To a limited extent, I have renamed conquered city and duplicative city names along the theme concept, for the very reason you stated. Very good suggestion, I will try to implement more.

The last thing ever read is the manual. I broke down and read the directions for uploading my City.txt file. Not all civilizations have added cities. So if anyone would like a slightly larger City.txt file here it is available for your use.

If I get really ambitious I can write a program to just list the "new" city names by civilization.

*** See new file that was uploaded. Just shows the new cities. "Newcity.txt"

Unless your serious about using real city names, here is an easier way. Each continent gets a letter, for example your capital would be AO1 and the next city AO2 on up to A99 if needed on the first land mass. Continent No. 2 would be BO1 and the next continent would be CO1. One city size islands are Isle No.1, Isle NO.2 as required. The additional benefits to this system, besides not having duplicates, is that you know, immediately, if a city is connected to another city by road/rail when choosing what cargo to use on the freight that you've just built. And you know if the demand city is an island or on another land mass.

The two (mine and Ace's) are really the same. The difference is only cosmetic that one requires you to know History and Geography, while the other only requires you to know the Alphabet and how to count.
fixed ;) :p

Here is a version of the City.txt file that just has the new names I added. If no new City names have been added for a civilization, all you will see is the civilization name and "@STOP". You would need to cut and paste these names into your City.txt files.

The program took a bit longer to write then I expected. Also, I noticed that the City.txt file has duplicate names, such as Syracuse which was both a Greek and Roman city. I'm passing for now on deleting duplicate names.

If you have any names to add, send them and I can add to the list. Enjoy.
