I've played through this three times now, and the bug always occurs. An independent "distant lands" village, Nansarunai, that I am recruiting is attacked by an AI civ (Xerxes) and vanishes a few turns later, leaving behind ownership rights on three tiles that were part of the village before it vanished. I initially built a settlement two tiles east of the original village, only to discover that I couldn't build anything on the tiles Nansarunai had previously owned, nor would my town even claim them. I replayed the game and tried defending the village with an army commander and troops. Even though Xerxes departed with the village intact, it still disappeared a few turns later (turn 53) despite not being attacked or occupied. I have notified Firaxis of this, and sent along a few screenshots, a four-second video clip, and three save files. Hopefully this can be fixed, because it impacts gameplay.

Here are two screenshots I took (before and after) during my replay. I also attached the save file from Turn 52 of my replay sequence, which is one turn before the village disappears. It happens on its own, so you can just stand there. (Note: all units in the photos are mine except for the settler and a cavalry unit in the lower left. Both the AI and my civs are yellow, unfortunately.)

Note: if you're looking at the images, just to be clear, I didn't attack the village. After the village disappeared on its own, I moved my army commander to the spot where the village had been, because I was setting up to take a snapshot to send Firaxis, and I wanted to illustrate where the village had originally stood.

Here are two images from my original play-through, when I settled a town nearby and couldn't claim those Nansarunai hexagons. This might help for clarity.

I have seen this in a few of my games.

Ive also seen, the IP Center left on screen, the IP is dead, but the graphics are left behind.

This happened to me as well, the AI killed the independent village, and it left four squares behind that were still "owned" by the village, I built a city near there and was never able to claim those tiles.

i have it too on my last game, and the 3 tiles still on the IP owner have 3 resources ..... impossible to claim by my own town (created after the IP was destroyed by AI)

I just got a notification from Firaxis that the spontaneous despawning issue with independent villages has been fixed in Patch 1.1. I'm assuming that means the leftover borders issue has also been corrected, since that's usually what precedes it.

I loaded the save of the game where i can't claim the tiles with patch 1.1 to finish it and it was still impossible to claim the tiles (even with the american prospector, the 3 tiles had resources). So maybe it's due to an old save before the patch, i will see if it's ok with the next game ;)
