I've been modifying Civ 2 the last couple of years to make a better, but still simple and fun, game. The goals are:
1) Take lessons from later games: Namely siege weapons and movement speed. With zones of control, units can move roughly twice as fast and all mechanics still work. But it doesn't take 800 years to move your army now.
2) Make more units useful: Civ 2 migrated some Civ 1 units and ended up with a lot of useless ones. So you get catapults a little sooner. They're slow, but have the howitzer ignore walls talent. Chariots are cheap and fast. Elephants are TOUGH (2 hit points) and expensive, but NOTHING is in their class before Knights. Crusaders are still glass cannons. Various versions of archers are for defense.
3) Make modern times more accurate: For fun, you get Biplanes and Zeppelins early. Zeppelins are aerial bombers and carriers. YouTube makes people happy instead of a Cure for Cancer (didn't happen IRL). The Internet improves research speed, not SETI. I've added Drones, Orbital drops, Rocket artillery, and other reasonable things.
4) Here's where I need help, ADVANCED EDITING. Is it possible to edit what buildings or wonders do?
My changes speed mid game and make late game a bit offense-heavy (realistic?).
Civ 6 and beyond are behemoths with long waits between turns and too long of playthroughs, IMO. I liked how I could play a game with free time in a week with Civ 1 and Civ 2.

Installation: Just drop all the Beta Stable or Nightly files from the folder into your Civ2 main folder. It'll replace graphics or sounds, etc., so make sure to backup first.
