Except pretty much everything. For years I considered Civ2 the best game ever. I never played another game of II, after Civ3. Just so much better in so many ways. One unit kill the whole stack? Spy could do way to much.
Borders are a huge improvement and on and on. Did I mention mods?
I never played enough Civ 1 to really say much about it.
I *hated* stack death in Civ2 -- kill one unit, you kill them all. I also disliked the need for unit support via shields from the home city. It was like a long, umbilical cord; one had to keep worrying about re-homing a unit, so its original city wasn't crippled. The settler / engineer unit even required a food per turn to support it, so you had a disincentive to keep them around, unless you re-homed them also.
On the other hand, I loved the flexibility of caravans and freights in Civ2. I got such a charge out of delivering a load, and getting the payoff... a bit like the Great Merchants in Civ4, but you could do it more often. And yes, the diplomats and spies were somewhat overpowered. And I loved the advisors
I love the idea of bombarding units in Civ3, especially the lethal bombing that came with C3C. I like the additional victory conditions in Civ3 -- Civ 2 only had spaceship and conquest. I like the improved ability for specialists in Civ3, too.
Wasn´t stack death reduced a bit in Civ2? As far as I remember, in Civ1 you could kill unlimited numbers of units with one attack, while in Civ2 you could only kill 8 (land) units in one attack?
I am quite sure that was correct for caravans, not so sure for other units.
Anyway, I am with vmxa, Civ2 was great, Civ3 is even so much greater.

No. It wasn't reduced. However, there were things you could do to protect yourself from it. For example, build a fort with your engineers outside the opponent's city. Stack death didn't happen in forts. Engineers were really strong in Civ2. You could build railroads right up to your opponent's door and then move in with your howitzers.
One thing about Civ2 that's better than Civ3 is governments. All the governments in Civ2 were very useful whereas most of the ones in Civ3 are junk.
One of the wonders in Civ2 could force you to make peace iirc. I want to say it was the UN. Tat use to drive me crazy. I think you could over throw the senate in some case, but it was so long ago I am not sure.
Agreed on that. The Senate used to drive me crazy. OTOH, Democracy was so overpowered that something was needed to keep it back. Between WLTK day and zero corruption (LOL!), it was just crazy good.
