Civ IV: good, but plenty of bad

I actually enjoy the new UI design although when I first played CIV 4, I was overwhelmed by it. Getting used to it, it's really neat to have everything in front of you with popups fine tuning the information. For greater detail, you might be forced to go an alternative screen, but the key point is that you want to go there, as opposed to being forced to go there.

For me, it is the Civopedia that is the real tragedy. Icon based navigation is a horrible thing if the users don't understand what the icons mean. Also, the organization of the topics is very difficult to navigate. Sometimes I get stuck in subtopics with no idea on how to return to the table of contents. I have to leave the Civopedia, then return to it again. I'd like to see a text based layout to compliment the graphic layout.

If any of you Frixasians are reading this ... remember ... the user is looking for relevent information in the quickest amount of time. I'm sure the iconic navigation might be helpful a few months down the road, but right now, it is overwhelming to new users.

Still, the game is fun and very well thought out. My entire production team bought a copy last week and we are looking forward to causing virtual world wide panic come this Tuesday.
