Civ IV Tech tree question

I just got Civ IV for Christmas and I'm confused about the tech tree. In the Civilopedia and in that paper foldout it says that some techs lead to others, for example Masonry leads to Monotheism. However, when I researched Masonry, I couldn't research Monotheism next. Is this because I'm on a certain difficulty level or what? Help would be appreciated, thanks.

The lines on the ingame tech tree represent alternative techs. The "Required" techs are shown as a symbol in the upper right hand corner of that techs box.

you would have to look ingame as it doesn't look like the paper map shows it. but ingame or in the pedia you can see whats a Required tech and what techs are and/or techs meaning you need at least one of these + the required tech.

Each tech that has an unarrowed prerequisite has that prereq's icon in the upper-right of the tech's box. For example, Pottery has arrows from Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, plus the icon for The Wheel in the box, meaning that you'd need either Agriculture + The Wheel OR Animal Husbandry + The Wheel.

http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/techtree/index2.php has all the prerequisites mapped out. White arrows are OR gates, meaning you need one but not necessarily all of the prereqs connected by white arrows. Colored arrows are AND gates, meaning you need ALL the prereqs connected by colored arrows.

For example, Music has white arrows from Drama and Literature, and a colored arrow from Mathematics. This means that to research Music, you need Mathematics AND either Drama or Literature.

Hope that helps :D
