Civ IV: The game that should have never been made.

I'll admit it. I was anticipating Civilization IV, and now, I honestly regret ever getting the game. This is one of the faultiest pieces of crap I have ever played. Here's a tip, if you were planning on getting it, use your money on something better like Battlefield 2 because once you get this game, you will hate yourself for life. Atari should have never sold the title to the know-nothing 2k Games, who can barely equal Firaxis' gaming capabilities to Civ 2. I have organized this post into my own little personal preview for you.

Barbarians: Ok, so I pop in the game and start up as the Germans and im thinking to myself "Wow, what a great game!" How could I ever be more wrong? I found my first city and shortly thereafter, lose 2 scouts because of barbarians, which was pretty bad. I founded 3 more cities and became the first to found Judiasm, then out of nowhere, a 5-unit barbarian horde comes out and ravages my capital and another city. So now im stuck with 2 cities. I mass produced Swordsman and Archers and launched an offensive against my capital that had been captured. I had roughly 3 swordsman and 2 archers attacking about 3 archers. This is when I discovered that the Barbarians can actually MASS PRODUCE archers and use some weird hack so that they can clobber my swordsman (level 6 str) with their pathetic 3 strength. Not to mention, these units were trained at a barracks and had the City Raider I promotion, which abusolutely nothing. I quit that game. So I enter the Rome scenario and 3 of my cities are captured by a barbarian horde of 7 swordsman and axeman that came from seemingly nowhere.

Artifical Intellegence: So they were claimed to be smart. Guess again. This AI was deemed to be "competitive" and when they outnumber my cities 2-to-1, they have no military whatsoever other than an occupational guard. This was on the difficulty Noble. Now tell me when a 13 year old child starts to own the crap out of a computer on an Easy-Moderate difficulty and ne might wonder "Were they designing this game for a 4-year-old?" Yes, they were, they were trying to pull more of the youth up to like the game by dumbing down the AI to such a poor extent. The AI's attitude was HORRIBLE. Im sure the Russians are only going to be annoyed when I burned 3/4 of their cities. When you do get a friend, they usually are on the Friendly mode. Ok, so I tried to sign a Defensive Pact. Nope, they were stupid enough to reject it when I was the leading world nation. The AI in this game is nearly as stupid as Civ 2.

Graphics: Realm of the dead. Zoomed out, the graphics are awesome...for the terrain. The unit graphics are worse then they were in Civilization III. This game was so badly plotted that they decided "Hey guys, lets NOT test it on Radeon graphics card and just ship it to make out fans happy!" Yeah, thanks the pixelated tiles, I enjoyed that. Civelopedia graphics are terrible. Gee, I didn't know that Modern Armor had TRIANGULAR turrets! The cities were designed beautifully along with the terrain, but the units is a no go, its just so bad its nearly indescribable by the English language. The ICBM, which looks little more than a steel spike with paper mache and a green tip on it. On a computer that had no video card, Civ 2 and Civ III worked, but not Civ IV, the terrain was ALL BLACK! AWESOME.
If you have already bought this game, you'd better start writing a suicide note.

Also, if you already bought this game then read this for some pros and cons about what you can do:

Pro: Makes a great gift to someone you hate =)
Con: It’s too cruel to make them feel that bad

Pro: Makes great firewood!
Con: Can’t burn well

Pro: A good dog toy
Con: Dog’s may choke on sharp pieces

On a scale of 1-10, im afraid this game will have to earn a 5.5. Its mediocre at best for a Civ game. I was very dissapointed by this game.

Thanks for your time and HEED MY WARNING!

While I agree with the AI being not reacting to their citys being taken over well (As in relationship wise) I still think the game is great. And the AI, Diplomacy, etc etc is MUCH better then Civ III

i hope this thread doesn't get anymore posts and dies, but,
before it does, i just wanted to say:

the game does not in any wise suck.

i was excited reading this thread, thinking about how great it is!

1. You have the option to turn Barbarians off.

2. Noble level IS FOR 12-13 YEARS OLD.

3. Seriously, even Dell ship their PC with Nvidia cards. What's wrong with you?

The AI doesn't react to their cities being taken over? eh? o_O Did they really let that slip through?

I think the game is a great step up from Civ3 and have enough confidence in Firaxis to patch the game to be nearly perfect. One of the biggest problems with Civ3 was patching things without breaking others. Civ4 was designed in a much better way that will allow for it to be patched much much better.

also, yes, i play at warlord setting, and still sometimes get outpaced
by the computer. (i know, i know! what cna i say, i'm not a TRUE
civfanatic yet i guess!!!)

but i like it!

They do react. And most times well. But some times there relationship is not affected and it is still set to "Annoyed" instead of "Furious" when you are down to there LAST CITY!

Oh, and some times they are like "Hah! I do not want to speak to you! Prepare to be destroyed!"...When they have a single...unguarded city that is about to be taken over. That is also bad.

Seriously, if you have problems with Barbarians turn them off.

Think of it as, Barbarians are like terrorists, well, if you look at a nation like Iraq right now, every city they have is under a constant attack of barbarians. How is the game much different from real life? Rebels and terrorists take over and control cities in the real world just as much as they do in this game.

As far as Barbarians hacking to allow them to mass-produce archers, whatever to that. I have never seen it happen, and I'm sure most people here haven't, minus you of course.

I've had one game out of many where Barbarians took it upon themselves to attempt to wipe me off the face of the Earth, well, what can I say? Keep your cities defended strongly and build military assets until you feel that you are prepared to start developing other things, once you have controlled the barbarian threat.

Funny post, im still laughing.

1. Yeah, great idea, ill turn off the barbarians and make the game less challenging and colonize an entire continent unscathed!

2. Haha, my father plays on noble and loses, this is funny.

3. I dont use a dell

Sounds a bit messed up... but easily patchable I'm sure, which I'm sure it will be very soon.

Nonsense, everything is working as intended :p

It's their way of euthanizing themselves

mrdie: well, i think that is only natural.

i recently butted horns with old tokugawa in my last game.
when we were competing for territory, he was often quite annoyed with me.
once i started taking his cities, he was FURIOUS!

but once i devastated his capitol, splintered his borders, and ravaged his
outlying cities, well... his fear of me caused his attitude to improve somwhat!
kekekeke! now he only has two far flug cities, rapidly being swallowed by my
culture borders, and he is often quite pleased with me... because i stopped
my bloody massacre of his forces!

really, i think it is only natural for once furious nations to temper thier mood
towards you a little once you arein a position to erase them from life itself.

though, on the same token, i would like to see very aggressive
civs fight like cornered rats once and a while!

I sure hope so anyway.

Actually you've a point there... maybe that's how it works intentionally?

Especially since you mentioned:

I love this game!!! The interface is awesome (except civipeada needs a little work). This gameplay is way better then Civ3, I didnt have any real problems with barbarians just the normal stuff. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who is a civ fan!!!! my score (9.5 out of 10)

BTW, I can play the game even on my old computer: 866mhz, 512 ram, 128mb Geforce 5700 le with very little lag! Medium Graphics settings.

Archers have a 100% city defence ability. Your 6 vs 6 straight away. Plus they get 'first strike'.

ROFLMAO

I couldn't help but laugh at this one, and it prompted me to post.

So tell me, because the game gives you a challenge, and you *dare I say* actually lose, you're pissed with the game and want to return it? LOL

You sir, are the bee's knees! :D
