Civ V Cheats? How do I create a unit?

I've enabled debug mode and pressed the ~ (tilde) button. I open the menu and click the create unit button. It will create a unit but it's a slightly different color and I can't use the unit at all. Any tips would be appreciated.

I used the in game editor once, but I felt too compelled to just spam Infantry everywhere. Took the challenge out of the game.
