Civ V - Will an Elvis return?

I don't think anyone in their right mind wouldn't say that Elvis is about as iconic as you can get when it comes to music stardom.

Apart from The Beatles perhaps, he is The Legendary Rock and Roll artist.

Elvis is kind of overrated. When it comes to 50s rock musicians, give me Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, or the black musicians Elvis was ripping off.

About Rock and Roll yes...but what about the rest? Jimi for Rock

Firaxis chose a great song to go along with the Rock and Roll "wonder", Rock and Roll by the Velvet-:):):):)ing-Underground.

James Brown for Soul

I'll agree.

David Bowie for pop (imho)

I'm not sure how much "pop" qualifies as a genre. But I'll go with The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson.

Sex Pistols for punk

Bah. The Ramones, no question. Never has a band more embodied a genre of music.

Dont forget james dean or marolyn monroe. Both were very infuential in their short peroids of time.

Madonna also.

I approve your existence. Continue.

Stan Rogers for folk! But maybe not because then he couldn't lead the Canadian civ down the road…

Now that i think of it, Firaxis should definitely add Vera Lynn for war times, and maybe Justin Biebier for when you lose the game? ^^

I'm not going to get into a debate about the various merits of artists; my point had nothing to do with artistic merit and all to do with iconographay... but Stiff Little Fingers would be the punk band, silly.

I think the Great Artist should be a well known person. Seriously, what's Elvis and why do old people in retirement homes like it so much?

I guess I missed something. Civ5 has CGI advisors??!!?? Why do they feel they are needed and won't all of us ignore them as we did in Civ2?

I ignored them as well in Civ2, after a while they became a bit repetitive. And I wish development wouldn't put so much focus on presentation. But on the other hand, we have to admit that the Civ2 advisors were a pretty popular feature among a significant part of the fanbase, there were always threads that hoped that they would return. Since Civ3 and Civ4 didn't have them, I guess it's their turn this time around. :)

But why add something that provides no gameplay value while taking out units that do?

Because it adds a charm to the game. The advisors were so over the top, its die-hard hilarious, especially ancient/medieval Military Advisors. They adding it for nostalgia, something to make the game memorable once Civ 9 is out, and (hopefully) be funny while giving valid advice. Plus, they were going to add CGI advisors in III. Only one video exists for proof, and its only one clip. One would not be complaining about it if it was a tradition since Civ II, like no one complains about the news report before every mission in C&C.

However, the Civ Rev advisors just were annoying, with the gibberish and the over-the-top acting gone. And you can't disable them, unlike in Civ 2. I do hope they are more like the Civ 2 ones, not the Civ Rev.

We need the great artist to be a random chance between Elvis, James Brown, and Michael Jackson.

That way it includes the Kings of Pop, Rock, and Soul.

If I had a choice of advisor, it would be James Brown... no question about it. They called him "the hardest working man in entertainment" and it showed. Talent + Hard work ethic? Sounds like an immediate qualification for my council.

Of course, someone will have to keep him out of the booze.

But why add something that provides no gameplay value while taking out units that do?

ciV advisers ≠ Civ II advisers. Not by a long shot. You can read about them at the bottom of this page. Also, it seems that some of them will give you synthesized data, like the military adviser giving you estimates of enemy troop levels.

As for your claim about removing some units detracting from the gameplay, that's debatable. And the implied dichotomy of keeping in old units vs. adding advisers is pretty much laughable.
