Civ Wannabe

Hey Folks, Love this site and all the informative posts.
I am very intrigued about this game as it seems to require careful planning and strategy.
I have never played Civilization but after seeing it in PCGamer as 2nd best game series of all time I want to take the plunge.
Any suggestions as to what I should get as a newbie, Civ 1,2,or 3??
Also what piece of advice will help make me a Civ Fanatic??

Well.. I guess it depends on your liking. I'd suggest Civ1 for picking up the basics, Civ2 if you're into creating and playing scenarios and multiplayer games, and Civ3 if you have a high-performance PC and wants a supertough AI that beats the crap out of you. All three are great games, but they're very different, and each has something the others don't.

My favourite is probably still Civ1. It's less polished, and directly to the bone. If you don't care for all the candyfluff of more recent games, it's really unsurpassed in its elegant, immensely playable design. I can't remember how many nights on end I've played that game and getting all worked up about it. It's superbly designed.

A word: I wouldn't jump into 3 without first playing 2. It'll teach you the basics, and it's a lot of fun ( No sh1t Hippo. Note the name of the site)
