In the beginning,

the Earth was without form,

and void.

... then came Pocket Civ.

I'm writing a Civ1-like game for Palm OS handhelds - thought some of you might be interested!

At this point there are only settlers, grassland, and no combat. So it's not actually a game yet, but if you'd like to give me some early feedback, check out: http://geocities.com/icepirates2/pocketciv.html.

Ah!
Testing this moment on my Handspring Visor.
When are you going to make a color version? With support for multiplayer over IR, of course. :p
The Visor has better specs than original system reqs for Civ1, so there's no limit here...

Haven't found any French yet, even after covering the world with the Union Jack.

Bugs/suggestions:
Leeds is the name of the city, not Leads.
Use hard keys for movement.
Minimap clutters up fast, especially with the enforced ICS. Better use 1 pixel/city, and forget drawing units.
Suggested prioritiies: GoTo. Then roads and then a workable game with a couple of military units, no research.

Good luck,
C.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. Keep looking for those pesky French... with the fog-of-war, you'll often have to double back the way you came...

I was thinking of using the hard keys for map movement (as opposed to unit movement), partly because there aren't 8 of them, and partly because it feels natural to me for some reason. I'm undecided about whether to lock up any hard keys other than the arrows - i.e. the phone book, task list, etc. Personally, I use those hard keys all the time to switch apps. Any preference there?

Hopefully the world map will look better once we have oceans to draw. It does get rather cluttered up, yes, but perhaps it's just like a printed map that fills in yellow for urban areas - with ICS representing urban sprawl?

My next tasks are:
1. city screen, so that you'll be able to select which unit to build
2. oceans, to make the map more interesting
3. combat! (with choice of Legion, Cavalry, Phalanx)
