After frustration and bugs using the Civ 2 Multiplayer Gold Edition in Simultaneous Mode, I have downloaded CivNet and various components to it from around the Internet. I have two questions for this illustrious group:

1) is there any hope for simultaneous mode? We have players with fast (cable and DSL) lines as well as an AOLer or two, and between lag time and crashes (such as, trading technologies) I am getting frustrated.

2) re CivNet -- is this the solution? And most importantly - does anyone know exactly which patch I should use?

Please let me know. Also, please drop me a line if you're interested in playing CivNet, it will probably be Wednesday nights 8:30-11ish EST that our group will play (currently we are still on Civ2MGE Simultaneous). Just drop the word "spam" from the email address below. I'll keep you on my list and drop you a line in a few weeks once we finish our weekly, bug-ridden Civ2MGE Simul. game.

yes there is hope..its called Age of Empires ;)

I can see no reason why it wouldn't work if someone built it that way from the ground up.I,personally,am quite happy with TBS.Real time would change things for the bad imo.It would come down to keyboard dexterity and connection speed.

Should have put "other" in the poll...

That way I could have voted, then said that Civ works best in the TBS form.

Empire Earth is probably more what you are looking for... Civish attributes, AND smooth realtime.

Interesting. What does "TBS" mean?

I will look into these other games. My real favorite is Empire, as in Empire Deluxe, from White Wolf. Another variant is Strategic Conquest on the Mac, circa 1990.

I agree with you guys re dexterity, "click factor," and making these things into a Warcraft-type arcade game, but I am looking for something that combines a strategy game with time-limited turns so me and my (other married) friends can actually finish a game during this millenium.

Strategy + Interaction MINUS hugely long turns (yes, I know about setting the time limit, still, 5 guys times 3 minutes is still two turns every half hour, which is ridiculous).

Which is less buggy, CivNet or Civ2MPG Simultaneous?

Matt

I have played CivNet several times, both on LAN and over the internett. Simultaneous mode in CivNET is workable. I havent had any craches while playing "online".

But you HAVE to install the lates Patch for it to work. Dont ask me what version though... its been 5 years since i played the game.

Its hopeless, and yes it is called Age of Empires ;)
