May not be as technical as thought. I can't get civ4 to run.

Background: ran well for years on hardware but laptop hard drive went bad and had to reinstall win10.
Don't know previous architecture, current is x86 64 bit.

How installed:
Source: civ4 complete DVD
First install as user did not appear to work, so uninstalled by removing "app", ie program
Reinstalled and tries to work. But hangs. Horrible experience with user account, but a tad better with admin user.

Added Civ4BTS patch 3.17 which came from civ fan. No error during install.
Still hangs on the advanced/options screen and can't select items or choose different tab.

Was getting new error "movies are not installed correctly", so made changes to CivilizationIV.ini file and the error disappeared.

Edits to ini file:
NoIntroMovie = 1

Also
EndSlides=1
GameUpdateTime=0
DisableCaching=1

In each update added "; <original value>" in line of name-value pair

So looking for ideas on what to try next. Thank you for looking

Microsoft has removed the software from Windows 10 that allows the OS to use the copy protection scheme that many older games, including CIV, use. No copy checking when the disk is copy protected means the game won't run. You need to install BTS 3.19, which is the version that no longer needs the disk in the drive in order to run. So, with BTS 3.19 it does not matter that the copy check software is no longer there, since the game will no longer be checking the disk.

Also be sure that you have given the game "Administrative" privileges. RIght click on the game and choose that from the menu that appears.

Pffft, fails. It took 3 downloads to get an patch exe that would install.

Only way could get it to partially work was to hit windows key and go back to BTS.

Was able to be get mod info: it shows 1.7.4 as build. Is that the correct build if 3.19 installs correctly?

Appears to be working now. Changes:
1- uninstall
2- select properties first and select compatibilty mode: note Windows 8 FAILS, but Vista SP2 works
3- install in new folder and not default

I'll test a bit and let you all know. I am using the latest version of windows 10.0.17763

1.7.4 is the last update version number for the unmodified CIV. You checked the info on the original. The version number for the last BTS update is 3.1.9 (aka 3.19). The BTS folder is inside the CIV folder. You need to go into it to find the exe for BTS to check the version number.

Product version on the civ4beyondsword.exe is 3.1.9. (128100) so I think that is with patch. Some resolutions hang, but seems to be working. Next step is to update with my mods and see how it works

FYI. Initial hanging was from movie. Disabled movie and mostly working, except I didn't save my edits correctly, so have to rebuild
