Civ4 REALPOLITIK

Realpolitik
n. [German : real, practical (from Late Latin relis, real. See real1) + Politik, politics (from French politique, political, policy. See politic).]

Politics based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations.

Civ4 Realpolitik

A multiplayer PTBS-based team game where each playing Civ is regarded as a Government, and 8 main Governing Body members help define co-operately (or not) the future of their Civilisation. These people are elected into these positions and hold term for a set amount of time (30 turns). With all of these positions, every important decision relating to the game will be accounted for. Each of the 8 Governing Body members have particular strengths, in the form of double, triple & sometimes even quadruple votes in their relevant fields. This is where the real politics come into play. Majority rules, and not only will you be worried about the interests of other Civ's, but you'll also have to worry about your fellow advisors... if you want you shape the Civilisation you're in, then you'll have to exert some influence... but at what price?

Disclaimer:
WARNING! This game burns at a slow pace, while tension builds up at a much faster rate. You will be entering the Civ4 world of politics and must be prepared to deal with all manners of political espionage, intelligence & deceit. Play this game long enough and eventually any other version of Civ, solo or multiplayer, just won't feel the same. You may even begin sleeping with a gun underneath your pillow, check your back every 10 steps while in public, and perhaps be alarmed by the subtle movement of a passer-by... he scratched his nose... does that mean he's 'one our side?'.

Become a fully-fledged Politician! Win an electoral position and strive to keep it! Keep your fellow policitians happy, while keeping the Civilisation moving forward! Look out for backbenchers, they're a part of your Civilisation but do not have a Governing Body position yet... come next election, they may want yours!

The Governing Body

Leader: The most powerful & influencial member... and also the most backstabbed.

Vice-Leader/Treasurer: Become that backbone of reliance for your Leader, while surging the economy forward.

Military Advisor: Commander of Military Operations, you recieve voting bonuses for anything with a weapon. In wartime you lead your soldiers into battle... where you'll either return as a hero, or a backbencher.

Infrastructure Advisor: Prefer the power of running the Improvements & Wonders show 'behind the scenes' without all that media attention?

Cultural & Civil Advisor: Civics, Happiness & Culture, if you like multi-tasking and a balanced power spread, then this one's for you.

Foreign Affairs & Trade Advisor: A position that will only grow in importance with time. You are the one responsible for running your Civilisations spy network & having a powerful say in who's your friends... and who aren't. You also do a bit of legitimate trading, too.

Scientific Advisor: - Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. [Arthur C. Clarke]
Make some magic happen.

Relgious Advisor: Who needs spies and all this political mumble-jumble, when you have the most influencial religion, with missionaries spread wide and far?

Become a Spy!

Too much politics for you?? Then find yourself in a foreign Civ, living the life of a true spy in Civ4 Realpolitik. Anonymity is paramount, or else you may find yourself both out of favour with the enemy, and your home state who claim they never knew you.

Does this game have a limit of players? No!
Is it ever too late to join? No!

Yes, they're are 4 Civs & 32 Governing Body positions... but you may always join a Civ at any time and enlist as a backbencher. Backbenchers even get a vote when it comes to minor decision making!

So how do I join?

1. Familiarise yourself with the Rules of the Game, found in the Realpolitik main forum (as a sticky).

2. You have two options with enlistment. You may approach one or more Civilisation's personally, by posting your interest publicly in their "Join [Leader] of the [Civilisation]" or sending a private message to any current Governing Body member. Alternatively, you may post your own thread and let the Civilisation's poach you.

Note:- With espionage a key element in this game, please note you may have to prove your worth to a Civilisation you wish to join.

3. Unless there is an open position in the Governing Body, you will be required to stay on the backbench until the next election, where you may run for a position.

4. Once accepted, soak in as much info about the game as possible. If you have any queries, you may ask your fellow Civ members, or post in the FAQ thread. Soon enough, you should be a fully fledged Civ4 REALPOLITIK member!

So what are you waiting for? Join the REALPOLITIK team in a suspense-filled world of smoke & mirrors, politics, intelligence & espionage... and of course... Civ 4!

Civ4 REALPOLITIK

News Thread #1: 2160BC-1720BC (Turns 1-12)

The day dawns. It is 2160BC, and four great civilizations have been formed. The Indians - led by Ghandi, the Japanese - guided by Tokugawa, the Germans - following Bismark, and the Russians - under the banner of Catherine.

People flock to the banners of these four great people, and the four leaders quickly ask for representatives to govern their empires while they oversee all throught the ages . . .

After several days of debate and discussion, the Governing Bodies of the four civilizations are announced:
Abdukrahman has been elected to lead the Indians, while Great Scott, Sigma, and azzaman333 have each been duly elected the leaders of Japan, Germany and Russia (respectively).

The sun rises further in the sky as frantic activity begins throughout the known world. Cities are founded, groups of loyal and dedicated citizens begin to till the fields, corral the livestock, and mine the hills rich with ore deposits and stone quarries. More adventurous people are authorised to explore the surrounding area, and the first scout/cartogrophers of history are sent forth to explore and discover.
The revelation of small communities of underprivelaged societies grants gold, information regarding the landscape and occasionally a new and magnificent technology.

As was bound to happen, eventually the brave scouts of these mighty empires would meet. Caution preceeding goodwill, very little is said between the strangers to each other, rather, they continue on their respective missions; explore & discover!

The seasons have turned again and again, the crops have been sown and harvested, the mines' productive, and life is good for all. Centuries have passed since these burgeoning civs first decided to settle the land and grow vast and powerful. To the far West, the Russian and German borders grow closer and closer, sparking interest and tension in almost equal measure. The Russian and German people still have very little to say to each other and the movement of scouts and occasional military units on borders cause concern in both camps.

Dawn. 1720BC. German workers assisting Berlin with building Farms, Mines and roadworks are suddenly, with no warning beset by a savage bow-and-arrow weilding militia. They are quickly surrounded and captured. After several hours of extensive questioning and searching, it is determined that these workers are now subject to a as yet unknown leader. These terrified, shackled captives are now under close guard, and wondering what is to become of them . . .

Meanwhile, at the Great Table, the meeting place of all civilizations to discuss important matters; a road-weary messenger arrives to speak with Sigma.

"My Lord, we have been attacked!!! The workers assisting in the development of Berlin have been ambushed my an archer division!"

"Who is responsible? Do we have any further intel on this situation?" Hissed Sigma to his aide.

Seeing the frantic commotion around the German leader, Herander, the Cultural and Civic advisor of Russia politely clears his throat, stands and asks for attention.

"Declaring that a state of war exists between the Government of Germany and the government and the people of Russia and making provision to prosecute the same.

Whereas the Government of Germany has continually threatened the security of the people of Russia:
Whereas the continued German presence has restricted the growth and expansion of the Russian Empire:

Therefore, be it Resolved by the Governing Body of Russia assembled, that the state of war between Russia and the Government of Germany which has thus been thrust upon Russia is hereby formally declared; and the Leader is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the government to carry on war against the
Government of Germany; and to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all of the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Governing Body of Russia."

Having finished his declaration, Herander resumes his seat.

Outraged, Kaiser Sigma immediately comes to his feet.

"Herendar spreads lies. Lies and misconceptions. This war was neither just nor asked for. The Russians only entered this war so they could capture our people (workers) and steal a piece of our land, that rightly belongs to us.

The Government of Germany has threatened the people of Russia? We haven't even scouted your border, much less sent a military presence. We also have not had any correspondence with your government, to make you or your people feel threatened. We are a peace-faring nation, and our military has stayed within our borders, unlike you savage warmongers.

The German presence has restricted the growth and expansion of the Russian Empire? Our borders aren't even touching yet. There's plenty of space between us in which to settle. Yet you have made no attempt to settle the open land.

Instead you barge into our country and try to take the land that belongs to our citizens.

Do not believe a word that the Russians say. They cannot be trusted."

Red-faced with rage, Sigma turns away from the Great Table and summons his military advisors to discuss this disasterous news.

Debate and argument spread like wildfire around the Great Table, and no-one knows for sure what will happen next . . .

Civ4 REALPOLITIK

We at Realpolitik reckon we have it pretty good. We're playing, what we feel is a sublime, ground-breaking Civ 4 experience.

What's even better is the fact we can play this game without too much competition from new players looking to take our Governing Body positions away from us. You see, new players can join up at any time in this game, and contest in elections for controlling position in any of the four civilizations currently in play.

We don't get it. Seriously. The game really is that good, it's wonder the entire Civ population isn't breathing down our necks begging to join. You don't believe me? Check this out...

In a recent poll...
76% of players said they would 'Definately' play in Realpolitik II.
14% said they would 'Probably' play RPII.
7% said maybe.
No-one said 'Unlikely' or 'No'.

So I hear you say, if it's that good, why don't you keep it a secret?

Well... a little tough competition won't hurt for one... and it's a small price to pay when RPII comes along... and with enough players (8 players per Civ), we can extend the amount of playing Civs well beyond 4... which will create a far more challenging, intruiging and rewarding experience.

Interested? Post here, or send me a PM. You can also click the Evo-Games link in my sig which will take you to the official RP forum section.

I'm pumped. This looks great. Somebody should go over to those other civ sites and do some recruiting, because this'll be great if we can get a load of people.

The rules look good, but there a a few questions. I'll head over to evo-games now, and join the discussion there.

Well the forums haven't been created yet.. all we have for the time being is a simple thread...

I'm hoping for alot of feedback on the rules... are they comprehensive? coherent? Missed anything???

Good to see i'm not the only one excited about this :)

Oh... we now have our own section 'Realpolitik' under the Civ 4 Multiplayer section.

I like 'The Table'.. a sub-section for diplomatic negotiations..

We'll also have a news sub-section, then 4 sub-sections for each Civ... which will be public... then in each Civ sub-section, a private forum (or two.. or more) for voting and strategic discussions.

??

That's a bit of an overreaction wouldn't you say? Unless you hate the creators of evo with a passion or something...

It's too much effort to worry about this on Evo and the Civ 3 MTDG here. And i like it here, its much better than most forums ive seen.

We need the ability to have private forums... if not, then all members will see what we're voting on... and will know exactly what improvements & units have been built in each city.

That, or the Leader would be responsible for emailing each member of their Civ what needs to be voted on, and it would become far too confusing and make the leadership role far less enjoyable.

This game needs support.. and evogames have offered it where others haven't. Personally, it's not too bad a forum, it may not be as good as here, but definately better than Apolyton.

Another major annoucement.. hehe... what was once 10, is now 8... in the GB.

The Old Format

Leader
Vice-Leader
Financial Advisor
Military Advisor
Scientific Advisor
Religious Advisor
Foreign Affairs & Trade Advisor
Cultural Advisor
Civil Advisor
Infrastructure Advisor

This has been bugging me for a while. Certain positions seemed to have very little influence in the game...

Vice-Leader: Sure, lots of votes and the official stand-in person while the Leader is unavailable, but I felt it needed more.

Financial: Quite simply, a very weak position.

So I decided to amalgamate these 2 positions... this gives the Vice-Leader a little more voting influence and a specialisation in form of being the Civlisation's treasurer.

Cultural: Culture alone isn't catching enough.

Civil: It was a fill-in position... with biases on a Happy Face producing improvement.

So I amalgamated these 2 positions into the Culture & Civil Advisor, to add a bit of backbone to just managing culture.

So now we have 8 positions in the GB, and viola, we now have the minimum numbers required to begin the game, 32. I've already altered the voting bias tables, now I just need to update the rules, which should be posted today on evogames.

The New Format...

Here's a problem though. I keep getting "invalid_session" every time I try to register for evo =/
Hmm, I don't know whats happening there. Perhaps you could delete the cookies for Evo and then try again? If after another attempt your still unable to register, then PM me here and I'll help to get this straightened out. And of course your welcome to contact the admin directly.

Anybody else have trouble registering?? We've had a few new registrations today and yesterday so somethings working proper.

a question to the rules....wouldnt it be better if the science advisor could directly choose what to research, instead of voting for it?

Aha! No-one gets that kind of power in Realpolitik!! Science advisors must use their powers of persuasion along with their vote... just like in real politics.

In case you didn't see above... we have enough members to begin.

Things to do!

1. Register at evo-games. There is a roll-call register in the main forums, please sign in there, and if your name is different there compared to here, please provide your Fanatics name so i may identify you.

2. Think about what Civ you want. Any traits or unique units you want? Also, start thinking about strength in numbers... the more people choosing the same civ, the better chance you have... remember, only 4 Civ's will be chosen.

AS SOON AS YOU HAVE REGISTERED FOR ROLL-CALL, YOU MAY CHOOSE THE CIV/LEADER YOU WISH TO JOIN.

3. Think about what position you want to run for. The 1st elections will take place in just over a weeks time. Start determining your strategy.
