Ok after many attempts I finally found a good and stable way to install all CIV4 software on Linux and avoid many issues and bugs.

As for dedicated Linux user I have made this handy pdf which explains for nearly all distributions how to install it and get it working.

Feel free to use and comment on it. Some bugs may exist but I have got nearly everything working including Pitboss! (this needs to be tested as I don't play online yet).

BTW you can also use this methode to get MODS installed and running properly.

One of the reasons this community is so great...

I don't use linux but I'd imagine this will be immensely useful to those who do. I applaud these kinds of contributions greatly!

Yeah I was looking for this for a long time. Ever since CIV4 came out. This is by far the best program to use under Linux and lets you adjust video memory, rendering etc etc just to make things easier and no more having to choose which windows type you need. It's a long read but as you only have to install it once it's worth the trouble. And it works better then Cedega or other non free programs. It's free, flexible and stable!
The prefix works great and the game speed is (when you adjust for video memory) also good!

I will try it. Right now I've got a stable Civ4 so I'm not ready to transition but in a week when the current games are done and I'm back home with my personal laptop! Thanks!

I'm going to try this. It will be on a dinosaur-comp, but I'm not planning on actually playing the game on it, but checking modfiles (the comp falls just under the minimum requirements). It would be really nice to not have to switch boxes every time I have to check a file.

A few extra notes since for ubuntu Jaunty users.

Now you need to use the custom installation as the express installation places CIV4 in some weird windows folder.

You do need the advanced wine plugin from PlayonLinux as it won't work otherwise (or you have to config it by hand). The cedega plugin is not needed

After installing Warlords no more debilitating hanging install. Just click away the error.

On Ubuntu Intrepid, the Complete Edition DVD and BTS 3.19 patch install and work fine with Wine 1.1.22 (Wine 1.1.23 didn't work) after using winetricks to install d3dx9 and msxml3. I didn't use Playonlinux.

I'm having trouble using third party mods, though, and am thinking of giving up and just running Windows XP in a vm.
