Ok people i'm at the end of my rope  I've just bought Civ 4 and done a clean install for it.

My probelm is that when i try to run the game from either the shortcut or the auto run i get the loading screen with the different languages on it. Then a smaller box with a blue bar. The blue bar goes to "checking XML" then stops and the box closes and all i get is the running from my tower.

I've called 2kgames 4 times gotten 3 separate solutions none have worked. I tried to call them again and their closed. I really DON'T want to have to wait untill tomorrow to call their offices because i have school tomorrow. I've done the new drivers thing (for my ATI card), done the like 25 step process found here: http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm, and even getting a new msxml3 file from microsoft.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm not mad at the Civ4 crew or ne1 just desperate for any solution.

Heres hoping for a speedy reply,

TBB

I'm having this exact problem and I "resolved" it by disabling my sound card.

I have a creative SB Live card for my Dell. As far as I can tell Creative sucks and is a lousy sound card because I've had problems with this card before.

Of course my drivers are all up to date and the game won't run with the sound card enabled. Disabling sound on in the ini file doesn't seem to work so I just turned off the card completely.

right click "my computer" >> properties >> hardware tab >> device manager >> sound, video, game controllers >> sb live card (or whatever your card is) >> properties tab >> go to each item and select "do not use features"

That worked for me. The game now runs with no sound.

I don't know who needs to make a patch for this, either firaxis or creative (or whoever your sound card manufacturer is).

Disabling the video card didn't work. However your directions lead me to get the updates necessary for the game to work. :D Thanks for the directions.

In short sound drivers being updated is what worked.
