Good news :-) It may work on my laptop too, then.
Guess it wasn't the hardware after all...:)

Another urban legend put to rest.

As stated in another thead in the techsup forum, a big hearty [censored] out to all of the people that came here to deliberately hound the intel 8xxx threads and brow beat people into thinking that there would simply not be a fix available for the card. Granted, it is 'below spec', but the ad-hoc fix of exposing the whole map was enough for me to see that there was a possible technical workaround to keep that part of the audience from being unable to play the game despire the 'below spec' video hardware :)

Kudos Firaxis for making sure I could play the game both at home AND on the road :)

Yes, kudos!

What I don't unserstand is that a short note early on from the publisher would have eliminated 98% of the frustration and ill will.

Example:

"The game was intended to run on XXXX hardware. We are unsure why it is not, and are currently looking into the problem. If it is resolvable, we hope to have a fix available in the shortest practical time. We ask our dedicated fans, especially ones with mobile pcs and integrated video cards that meet minimum specifications, to bear with us, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We want to continue to provide you, some of our most loyal fans, the enjoyment the Civilization Franchise brings for years to come. Thank you for purchasing this product, and thank you in advance for being patient while we investigate and try to resolve this issue."

On second thought, that was hard to write, and took over 5 minutes...I see now why they didn't do it. ;)

good for you.
by the way why do u thank to Firaxis? Didn't you pay for that? U$49.99 :(
He is polite?

Polite, yes, but also it's a thanks because the game specifically said "hardware T&L required" all along, which the Intel 8*** cards do not support, so they didn't *have* to patch it to work. But given a whole crowd of life-long "non-gamer" Civ players were indoctrinated into the weird world of even having to know what the hell "T&L" is and were left behind in the original release, it's a nice decision now, although I haven't tried it out yet on my system. One question to those Intel 8*** folks that have tried it, does it clear up the stuttering videos?

@Zubiemaster: Exactly! :) (and maybe I am polite..... sometimes ;) )
And the video's are still stuttering a bit, but IMHO that's the least important bit of it. The black terrain was the big problem, and that's gone now.

I was one of the people that said there would never be a fix for the intel cards. I am still skeptical that it is what I would call "playable" on the intel cards, but I am happy for the intel card owners. After all, it is better that the game work for someone else, even if it is at the expense of being wrong. :)

Still, as has been said, it *IS* below spec, and that is not always solid ground to stand on. Don't necessarily expect any other given game you want at the store to work below spec, or be patched to run below spec.

Civ is in the position of having a decidedly non-hardware-junky following, so in light of that this approach makes more sense.

I think my main problem with the issue was not the fact that it didnt work well on laptops, it was the fact that many of the hecklers seemed ECSTATIC to come and inform people that thier hardware was junk, they chose poorly, they should replace thier $1000.00 -> $3000.00 laptop they just purchased, etc...

If everything could have just gone more 'civilized' on the civfanatics forum (sorry, bad pun), all of this ill-will could have been avoided :)

I agree though that it would be a bad bet to assume that games that require HwTnL will ever work on non-TnL cards :) It's just in the case, the game hobbles around ok without TnL...

Of course, at the end of the day, my desktop played the game JUST FINE and I was prepared to accept that I couldnt play on my craptop :)

Well, to be fair, there was just as much of a "people with good hardware are *******s automatically" vibe coming from the other side. I have been in thin times where my hardware has been utter crap (I had a TNT 1 when GeForce 3's were all the rage), so I know what that side of the fence is like. Now I am cleanly on the other side of the fence with a formidable(although not ultimate anymore) 6800 Ultra.

While I am aware that a lot of jackoffs buy good hardware just to masturbate over it publicly, I sincerely buy mine just so I can have high framerates and decadent levels of anti-aliasing (for some reason my eyes don't do well with 1600x1200 etc, so I became a sort of anti-aliasing junkie.)

I prefer a moderate resolution (1024x768->1280x1024) but literally max-jacked AA and Anistropic. I have found through experiance that getting a really fast videocard is the only way to do this, straight high-rez is mostly easier to run than mid-res high-filter.

So what do you guys think will be for those who have Radeon IGP 345M?

Please don't ask me those kind of things...
I am a complete idiot when computer hardware (and software ;) ) are involved, as can be seen in the thread at CDZ to which I linked in the first post... :crazyeye:

Sorry! :(

hopefully this patch will fix many of the graphical problems that people have. like me
