Please note:
1. This is not a mouse vs gamepad debate. I concede that keyboard and mouse is superior to gamepad. No need to post a reply just to say "gamepad sucks."
2. Many of you avid steam users probably already know this so I apologize for posting something that people may already know but I just learned this and have been enjoying it so I thought I would share for any others that may not be aware.

Steam has integrated gamepad support for many types of gamepads (xbox, ps4, etc) not just steam controller and it can be used with any game on steam even if the game itself does not support a gamepad. It's similar to the old xpadder program if you are familiar with that except it's much better and part of steam so no need to run a separate program.
As it turns out, Firaxis has even created an official controller setup configuration and made it really easy to map tasks to the various buttons or change the setup however you like. I have tweaked the official setup from Firaxis to my preference (see image below).
If you play Civ6 sitting at a desk you probably want to stick with a mouse but I play Civ6 on my laptop which I often connect to my 55" HD TV through HDMI. I also travel occasionally for work and will often bring my laptop and connect it to the hotel TV. Typically this means also having a wireless keyboard and mouse but the xbox controller is much easier and works beautifully for sitting on the couch or hotel bed!
It's easy to setup by going to settings in Steam's "Big Picture" mode. Here is my setup, enjoy!
