I have recently moved up to Monarch level (Fractal/Epic) and to be honest I'm getting well and truly whooped, every time. I've worked hard to improve my tactics and strategy, but I'm still finding it hard to keep up with the technology race.

One reason for this (I guess) is my lack of understanding the Civics. In the past I just upped them as and when I discovered the relevent knowledge, this never was a problem pre-Monarch level, but it looks like it could well be now.

Basically I'm after a helpful and concise list of which Civics I should aim for, and which Civics I should avoid depending upon different scenarios (i.e. aggressive warmonger - go for Slavery(?), avoid Free Market(?)).

I have tried the Manual, but thought best to ask the experts.;)

It's certainly not a good idea to just switch to the latest available civic. Some civics are only suitable for some game situations.

In most games, HR, Bureaucracy and Slavery will be my core civics. I will switch religious civics to suit purpose. I tend to favour Free Market for the Economy, though State Property (large empire) and Mercantilism (Large Empire, few trade routes) both have their uses. I'll usually switch fromBureaucracy to Free Speech in the late game (assuming a Cottage Economy).

Certain situations will lead to different use, of course. If I've got the Pyramids early on then a switch to Representation and a specialist economy may be on the cards - and that can often mean Caste System and Pacifism as well.

Try playing as a Spiritual civ. They can change civics freely and, if you work it right, you can get a lot of benefit - switching between Vassalage/Theocracy for units builds and Bureaucracy/OR for improvement builds, for instance. Or switching to Nationhood for a quick draft of garisson Rifles.

I do favour a Spiritual leader (spiritual/industrious ideally), but more so because it gives a better chance of founding a religion. I'll give that a go, ta.

That's what I was after, nice one.

Cheers m8.

No problem. Hope you found it useful as I note you are moving up to Monarch. I'm still trying my hand at prince but I think my civic use has improved!
