Civilization 4: Connecting to People not Near You Help

I've recently started playing Civilization 4 with my best friend and her boyfriend. They live in another state from me, so we used Hamachi so we could connect to one another. We used direct ip connection to do so and it works for a little while. Then the problems start...we're not sure what happens. It'll work for 30 minutes, sometimes shorter or longer, then it'll stop working for one of us. Hamachi will turn the person's 'green dot' into yellow, red or offline. We're not sure why and have tried lookign for a solution but can never find one. We also tried online games to connect.It works for me and her, but not for her boyfriend. Any help on how to be able to play to one another without having to be right next to eachother and without problems would be a great help.=]
