You should probably go for a slight drop shadow under the symbol. These are my preferences:

Under the symbol is what I said! All icons should have a little shadow in them, for example under the moon and star in the Arabian icon:

You guys may be interested in this tutorial. As it comes with a template I find it much easier to follow and churn out icons with.
