Civilization V causes ATi Driver Crash

Hello, here's my system specs:

AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition
ATi Radeon HD 5670, 512MB DDR, Catalyst 11.12 Drivers
4 GB RAM [3.2 used]
Windows XP Home Edition 32-Bit
1366x768 @ 60Hz monitor

Civilization V seems to run fine for 5-10 minutes, after which I get freezes at random moments, lasting 10-15 seconds. After the freeze the game becomes playable normally again. Eventually I get a freeze that lasts 25-30 seconds and then I get a message saying that my Display Driver has crashed. My Windows goes to a 16-colour mode at 640x480 and I am forced to restart the computer to resolve the issue.

Background music continues playing throughout the freezes and the driver crash, mind you.

This has occurred both times I've started up Civilization V and is therefore, reproducible - I just have to keep playing the game long enough.

Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated. :)

Edit: Issue resolved by turning Fog of War to Minimum

This can happen increasingly often when the temperatures are too high. Eventually the card even takes permanent damage and the issue won't ever go away. However it could also just be a driver/random bug (sometimes a newer or older driver will work better) since the internet is full of reports of this issue for both AMD and NVIDIA cards with no real solution whatsoever (except for sometimes too high temperatures being a trigger for it).
So turning down a graphic intensive feature like fog and shadows or also anti-aliasing was/is a good idea.
