CivNet Play by email anybody?

So nobody is up for it? That's cool.

I'll be around if anybody comes along that does. Heck, I don't see me leaving these forums until Jesus comes back...

This is years old thread but... would you still be up for this? Or anyone else?
Heck, if we had started the game 3 years ago we would had finished maybe 2 games already.
So, if someone is interested let's start pre-game discussion (what scenario to play?, do we play civnet or civdos if that's possible?,special rules etc...).
Merry Christmas anyway!

I've not had much time to play Civ the last half decade or so (heh, my last login here was 2006) and I doubt I'll have much time in the next half a decade either. If I started a game I'd probably not get a chance to finish it.

I suspect CivNet users are in something of a minority here?

What may generate more interest would be a DOS Civ "succession game" (together with humorous postings by players as they go).

I'll need to find my copy of civnet but that shouldn't be a problem. What version is yours?

I guess my CivNet is patched to 3.0. If it's not I'm gonna patch it.
I did some research with hot-seat mode of CivNet and spotted some strange behaviour/problems.
First, you can see each other's map, cities and units. This is not big deal for me and actually I think it would be interesting to see how other people develop their civilizations.Of course it makes suprise attacks etc impossible. It would be like playing chess.Second thing is more irritating. When you save game and reload it you have to choose the number of human players and select civs again. This however means just pressing enter/ clicking ok few times.Positive thing is that new player could take over an AI civ and enter the running game.
Also when you load a game it seems game always loads turn for player who has the first turn.Let's say the order of turns is 1-Russia, 2-Zulu, 3 -Egypt. When Russia has made his turn and clicks End of Turn then saves game and sends saved game to Zulu, when Zulu player loads the game, he gets Russian player turn. This means he has to click enter again to play his own turn. For Egypt this means clicking enter twice. And so on.(I hope you understand my English :P).
CivDOS saving/reloading as different civ didn't seem to work at all. When I reloaded game as different civ all movement point where 0.This might had been problem of editor I used, maybe direct hex editor manipulation would work. CivNet is anyway simpler to try.
I believe it's possible to play civnet pbem but it's just takes few turns to get used to it.
So, if these problems doesn't bother you, let's start the game when you have acquired CivNet.
I would like to just try fresh start civ game, 7 civs, random map.
Deadline for turns propably isn't good idea, but maybe at least 1 turn per week would keep the game going.Sometimes faster sometimes slower.
If we start this game, I believe we should start a new thread where we discuss about it.We might even get new players to jump in the game.
I have never played any game by e-mail, just some civ4 online( which is fun but I believe Civ1 PBEM would be more 'hardcore' experience of multiplayer Civ). But I think I have the patience for e-mail game aswell. At least I have been on this forum since 2005 and I don't see any reason why I couldn't play 1 turn of civ everytime I check this forum.
Whatever, I don't know if this thing is going to work, but it's worth trying.I'm ready to:scan:

If we can see each others cities then I don't see the harm in occcasionally posting screenshots for everybody else. Do you agree? And yeah.. We're both here for the long haul so bar bugs within the game this should run smoothly.

^^ Interest in a succession game gets raised every couple years but in the end it wanes off. No harm in making a new succession game thread and seeing what happens :) A pbem is new ground for the c1forums (apart from the civnet hookup thread). These are exciting time :) Does anybody else want to join in? You are very welcome to :) Speak up, ye lurkers!

Double post for dramatic effect. I'm going on holiday for ten days. Expect an early February start :) Is that cool? You could always start the game off and post the save file.

OK that's cool, no hurry.I will post the game later this month.
Settings will be:
- random generated world:- Landmass normal,Temperature temperate,Climate normal, age 4 billion years
-7 civilizations
-no cheating, I don't know if settler cheat exists in Civnet, but if it does I prefer not using it.Maybe checking eachother's civs could be allowed cause we have to do it anyways as the game isn't designed for e-mail game it seems.

I could be interested trying a PBEM Civ on EARTH map but I also wonder is there no way to play Civ 1 tcpip?

There is game called CivNet that is basically a multiplayer edition of CivWin.It's possible to play tcp/ip with CivNet but I have never tried it. I have read there are some issues. I'd like to try it anyway. If there's anyone who might wanna play with me, please contact me.Some day later this month or early May would be best time for me.

About the PBEM game, it might just be too awkward for many reasons.
