Here's what I had time to type up before going to bed. PLEASE add more info. Maybe we can piece everything together in a couple days. Right now I feel very lost with a lot of the game, making new discoveries every few hours...

RESOURCES
Five resources are listed on the left. Each resource is colour-coded and corresponds to a job that a housed citizen can be assigned to. Resources will trickle in at a low rate from the palace (better palace brings in more trickle resources), and citizens will bring in more trickle resources in between harvests. Also, you can play mini-games to obtain small amounts of science, culture, and gold.

Food
Getting food is how you increase the population of your city (this is a Very Good Thing). To find out how much food you need for your next citizen, mouse over the food. (And when you get a new citizen, don't forget to build a house for it so it can go to work!) Food is scarce at the beginning when everyone is trying to increase the size of their cities, so you can sell this early on for lots of money.

Food increases when citizens are designated as farmers and those farmers have places to do their farming at.

Ways to increase food production:
- house farmers near each other (this also makes them happy)
- build a granary (and upgrade the granary)
- build a 2x2, 2x3, or 3x3 plot of corn
- build an orchard in a place that is surrounded by water
- house farmers near the place they are farming from and delivering to

Production
Getting hammers is how you builld new buildings. Click on the build button and you can find things to spend your hammers on. Because they are so scarce early in the game (when everyone need food to grow their cities), you can make a lot of money selling hammers.

Ways to increase hammer production:
- house workers near iron, stone, or trees
- build (and upgrade) a sawmill near trees and house workers right beside (this makes them ecstatically happy)

Science
Getting science is how you discover new technologies (which allows new military, wonders, buildings, civics). Click on the science button and you can assign the science you have to an undiscovered tech. To find out how much more science you need to discover the tech, mouse over the science box. (Other players in your civ can help you research faster). Fairly cheap to buy early game.

Ways to increase science production:
- house scientists near each other and near the palace
- build (and improve) the library

Gold
Gold can be used to buy other resources, special resources, great people, and military. You can make lots of money early game by selling your food and hammers - but then you won't grow your city much. You can make a steady amount of gold by playing the path-making mini-game because that game regenerates every 11 minutes. (I average about 30 gold a play off from it.)

/// I'll add in more later when I have time

There's a lot more detailed discussion of this in the Resource Guide thread.

This is an old thread from before I posted my guide. Somebody just bumped it today.

But to answer your question: should you sell G. Scientists and Artists? My answer: sometimes!! Sorry that doesn't help a ton, but it depends on your purposes. I sell them if the price is very high and I can swap it for a G. Prophet or other G. Person whose more valuable to me. But you also might want to use them for building Wonders. Or you might have a Science economy, in which case you absolutely do not want to sell your G. Scientists.

Also, look at prices. If you can sell a Great General for 30K and win a financial era victory, is that more useful than having him boost your income in gold for 5%?
