most people like me wished for a way to claim territory so without us having to settle cities to get it and then are not sure of the other civ settling territory faster than you and claiming it for itself. this usually pisses me off [pissed]

well a couple of days ago i was playing on my huge southern european map and found that i wanted to claim italy and the land behind it for myself. well i soon found out that my rival India was closer to the boundary of my imaginative territory. i knew they would beat me to the territory so i came up with a plan. to claim it i had to block the only way for the AI to get to the territory. fortunally their was a gap that was the only way to the land so i had to seal that. so i stationed 6 knights and a near by spearmen at the checkpoint and had a 7th knight behind the front rank to assure that units cant slip through the space between the tiles. after a while i found all AI units came to the checkpoint realised their was no way in so they turned back and i had successfully created a checkpoint of no enterance :D

my plan worked and i was so happy :)

this plan worked for me on chieftan while playing vanilla civ3 v1.29f

someone may have discovered this before me but i just wanted to post it for everyone to know :goodjob:

heres a screenshot of my checkpoint: the red circle is the region i call black area checkpoint

I allready used this tactic. But only works if there's a gap !! With this tactic, you can quite easily "claim" Africa, Italy, Peloponesis or Scandinavia. But you obviously can't with France, Germany, China,... And in your game, your opponent stil can use boats to invade Italy. I had that problem. I controlled Africa, except two very littles areas in Sahara. Suez was blocked with a well defended city. These f... Romans came by sea and builded a city in Sahara !!

The AI can also land by sea, too...

and it always does land by sea if you keep that territory unsettled for a long time

But if you leave a one tile gap that you keep opening and closing (which is and exploit, IMO, unless that gap is in your territory), then they won't even try.

In C3C, they'll settle right next to your border. 1 tile gap or not.

Yea... That was a big problem when i switched over for PTW to C3C

Mmmh this really annoys me too, and the "settler race" is only fun to play when you win ;), but I'm not sure on what basis you could claim a virgin territory as your own without having inhabitants in it... maybe kill all intruders ? That's not too peaceful, allright, but claiming territory as your own is not THAT peaceful either :)
