Does anyone do the "Starting Age: Classical" option? Do you find you're in a better place or a worse place than if you slogged through the ancient era? Does anyone in particular prefer this to an ancient start?
I'm not quite sure what that means. I've never played farmville, but from what I know about it there doesn't seem to be a logical connection between it and an advanced start...
Anyone with constructive comments? If you don't like it or think it is a bad option (or I'm hindering myself) please advise. It does seem to flow poorly if I use it, but I am not sure if that is the advanced start or just a bad starting location.
Classical is my favorite place to start. It often means I'm not locked into a particular tech tree because of the resources I start near--having only calendar luxuries can be a drag in the Ancient Age, especially if you're trying to race towards techs at the bottom or middle of the tree. Plus, though I used to love the Ancient Era in Civ4, there's just something about it that bores me in Civ5.
Do you ever find that you lag behind the AI? Since they don't have to pick a tech path, I've found they challenge me for wonders much more quickly than in an Ancient start. Also, if it is a lower difficulty game I admit that I somewhat give up my Ancient Start turn advantage. Generally though, I am coming to prefer this start with "No Ancient Ruins" checked for the same reason you do: I don't have to take detours off of my tech path just to pick up Trapping or The Wheel instead of Iron Working or some tech that lines up more with my end goals rather than immediate concerns.
I almost always start in the Classical Age, and almost always lead in tech. I'm a wonderwhore, and I usually beat the AI to wonders (I play at King). I lose Stonehenge and the Great Library pretty frequently, but when I make a point to build them as early as possible I usually get them anyway. I also tend to abuse a settled Great Engineer from Meritocracy to amp up my production.
