So my first monarch game, playing as the persians (the worst game i've ever played... score was only 2100, it was a bad bad effort). but anyways... the whole game i was lacking in culture, as you can see in the screens which was kind of a worry, but not too much. anyways i continued my war with the mongols and iroqoius, tweedling my thumbs thinking things aren't too bad until i look at the culture in 1908 (screen).

So I'm way behind, they are looking at 75000 and mapstats telling me they are going up 540 some odd per turn which gives me less than 50 turns until they win. so take them out is really the only option considering my culture is around 10k. But take a look at the map from 1908...

So it was a daunting task none the less. By the way I should mention, in 1816 i had 11 full galleys on the way to the babylonian island there, when the idiot Celts attacked me. So the ships ended up reversing course and heading towards the Celts, which as you can see in the 1908 shot went rather well. I think I killed over a hundred units the turn i landed alone.

After that I took the remainder of that force, plus a bunch of others and assaulted Bablyon. I had to abuse my ROP, but managed to take out their capital in the first turn, and went from there. Lost a lot of units along the way, but manged to take out the babylonians, but check out how close I came to losing in the victory screen shot..

I went on to win the game but only got 2100 as my score.. I played so badly. Never built any infastructure.. never bothered with any culture.. pretty much was mobilized from nationalmism on. It worked out, but not exactly the most effective method for score. but anyways wooo go me first monarch victory.

PS I have saves from all kinds of spots in the game if someone wants to look or try themselves to see if they can stop the babylonian cultural victory.

One thing I did which i hadn't done before, was that as i burned their cities, i used the captured workers to create air strips to drop my troops in. Worked super well, im not sure why i hadn't thought about it before. Then when the continent was cleared i had enough airstrips laying around to send all my troops out to the next island and continue.

Phew.. another close call.. first of all I thought you had to have double your opponents Culture to win, so when the Comp got to 100,000 and I only had 65,000, and they landed guys on my shore.. i nuked them all... and all their boats and maybe a few of their cities.

Well, considering they were one tech ahead of me, they nuked me right back.. haha. but my army of wokers managed to clean up the seven core cities I lost...

Anyways their military was huge compared to mine, they had the larger continent, and as such were basically unstoppable so I started towards the only victory condition left: spaceship. They built every piece before me, as they were one tech ahead the entire time. They were on 9, building ten, and i was on 8 building 9. So I turned my research all the way off, so I was getting +700 gpt or something, and two turns later stole robotics.. that turn my ninth piece finished, and i had enough of a prebuild going my tenth piece finished the next turn before they had a chance to finish theirs.

Well after two close calls on my first couple monarch games i don't think i'll be moving it up quite yet, even though i haven't lost yet :P

I think you just could be quicker with your wars. Keep them going from early expansion until you can be sure you will be in complete control for the rest of the game. Then start to build up your empire with culture or push it until domination or do the space race. when you stop expansion too soon after early wars the AI takes the chance to recover or out-research you or out-build you.

BTW: Why is there the term "war-time" on the 1908AD screenie?

Yeah, that's closer than my closest calls!
What are those little boxes at the top? "Growing Cities: Bactra" ? Huh?

Here's my first Roman ROR win, I took the point lead on the 2nd turn before the end. ( I got a better score as Macedon tho)

The little boxes are from CivAssist.. a program you can find on the boards here under utilities or whatever. It lets you know when cities are going to riot, when trades are available and when people will talk peace, etc...

I use it because it saves a lot of time switching through all the Diplomacy options to see who will trade and yadda yadda.
